Team by Team Leaders in drawing Offensive Fouls

All right, the league leaders are fun, but you want to know who's been getting knocked to the floor most often on a team by team basis, and also whether offensive fouls have any correlation with team success.

Last year the top teams in drawing offensive fouls were:

1. Chicago
2. Utah
3. Phoenix

Team Off.Fls Off.Fls Net
Drawn Committed
Phoenix 265 166 +99
Chicago 254 203 +51
New Jersey 240 162 +78
Golden State 237 151 +86
Indiana 235 188 +47
Utah 217 184 +33
Toronto 216 150 +66
Dallas 207 148 +59
Milwaukee 203 157 +46
Miami 198 175 +23
Cleveland 197 169 +28
Philadelphia 195 165 +30
Washington 184 193 -9
San Antonio 181 148 +33
Denver 180 201 -21
Charlotte 170 167 +3
Memphis 168 185 -17
Sacramento 162 167 -5
L.A. Lakers 158 175 -17
Orlando 153 179 -26
Atlanta 151 197 -46
New Orleans 150 167 -17
New York 149 269 -120
Houston 147 138 +9
Boston 138 212 -74
Minnesota 137 182 -45
Detroit 117 150 -33
Portland 112 226 -114
Seattle 107 176 -69
L.A. Clippers 106 203 -97

So two of last year's top three are right back in the high life, while Utah has dropped only slightly to sixth. Hmmm, seems like there's a pretty strong year to year pattern here!

Now last year there wasn't a huge correlation between charges drawn and wins, but this season it is up some:

.52 Net offensive fouls (drawn minus committed)
.41 Offensive Fouls Drawn
-.45 Offensive Fouls Committed

We'll have more to say about fouls in future articles, but to summarize it looks like this:

1. players who are among the leaders in offensive fouls drawn are likely to have positive on court/off court influence

2. the correlation between team totals for drawing offensive fouls and net offensive fouls to wins is quite significant this season (although less so last season)

3. it takes one bad ass/crazy dude to stand in the way of an NBA superstar driving full speed to the basket!

..oh and yes Knicks fans, Eddy Curry did lead the league in offensive fouls committed by a very large margin.

See? This is the BS I'm talking about. Curry leads the league in offensive fouls committed. So in order to not foul out, he doesn't bother trying on defense... Ey Curry is 100% the main reason why we have the worst margin in the entire league and committed the most offensive fouls in the league by over 40. Pathetic.

Can you lovers finally admit that Curry is a joke of a center?

This proves the conspiracy by the NBA and the officials to limit the number of calls in favor of the Knicks. In particular, Marbury doesn't get the calls because he's so strong.

Remember what Isiah said? "Somethin' ain't right here."

We're -120 in that category, which is last in the league by far.

We need some floppers.

We suck the worst at this.

Yikes we committed 3.2OF/gm

These stats show how bad our man and team defense is. Basically our players get a free pass on defense so they can stay on the court and if they should so happen get winded they get lazy and commit fouls

a few thoughts...

40 more offensive fouls than the second-worst team? wow.

some of the teams at the top of the list at drawing charges are teams that don't have good shotblocking. the situations aren't totally correlated, but IT may be right that shotblocking is overrated... but you need another way to stop penetrators. we don't have it. teams like NJ get by, but we can't with what we have in our big men.

Can you lovers finally admit that Curry is a joke of a center?

So someone posts stats which demonstrate something we already know (Curry commits too many offensive fouls) and Curry fans are supposed to have some kind of epiphany?

We've already looked at numbers which show that Curry, despite the turnovers and poor foul shooting, is as productive with his touches as Yao Ming and Shaq. Doesn't sound like a joke of a center to me.

And while his total PFs per game have stayed steady, he's done that while playing far more minutes, so there have been relatively few games this year where he has been in foul trouble. He could spare a few more fouls on the defensive end, and I agree that he needs to use them more.

But while I understand the frustration that Curry has not developed a more well rounded game, I'm still mystified that the obvious positives he brings are ignored. With all his faults, if Eddy gets to the point where he is putting up 22 pts on 55% shooting, 8 rebs per with 1 block and 1.5 assists (numbers well within his grasp without a sea-change of improvement) he will be an All-Star, a far cry from a Joke Of A Center.

We had that article about bias and refs- I think a greater bias that refs have is the perceived nature of a team- i.e., winners vs. loosers.

We're perceived as loosers and many calls go against and not for us.

Curry is called for offensive fouls while shaq does the same thing and no call is made.

That doesn't explain it, but I think the effect amplifies what is already in place.

The biggest problem I have with this stat sheet is that two of the so called best defensive teams are in the bottom part. Houston and Detroit drew less than the Knicks?? Something is not right there. Even SA is in the middle of the pack. PHX is still considered a marginal defensive team at best and they lead the way.

Charges alone are not an indicator of how good your defense is. It shows hustle and players willing to play team defense but so do a lot of other things that don't show up in the stat sheet. If you have a good perimeter defensive team and a strong shotblocking presence you may block less shots. If your D is designed to keep the ball on the perimeter you may draw less charges. If you play great on the ball d you may draw less charges. I've had teams that couldn't guard a chair. Knowing this we funneled eveything to one spot on the floor. This resulted in a lot of charges. We were still the worst defensive team in the leauge. This stat by itself is meaningless.

What if we had more white players?

Would we get better treatment from racist refs?

Isiah is working on that. Two years in a row Isiah has drafted white players. Last year was David Lee and this year was Balkman.

The fact that he draws so much less offensive fouls that he commits is alarming, is it not?? It's a combination of his ineptitude on both ends of the court.

There's no comparison to Shaq and Yao, don't even try that. Curry does one thing... when he's given a clean pass, he puts the ball in... if he's within 5 feet. That's it. That's all he's capable of doing on the basketball court.

His rebounding: below-average for his size
His defense: unbearably poor
His shot-blocking: unbelievably poor for someone of his size
His effort: lack of effort on the defensive end is inexcusable
His griping about not getting the ball enough: embarassing
His lack of attempt to pass out of the post: selfish

Now, if the game was put the ball in the basket within 5 feet, Curry would be the star of the show. It's not. There's many more elements to basketball. Curry has mastered one, is passable in another, and flunked every other one.

What's scary is that as poor as the Knicks are, Curry makes them worse. How can the Knicks have more success with Mo Taylor/Kurt Thomas playing center than him? Seriously. WTF.

The basic problem is that Eddy Curry is fat. If he loses some weight, these stats will improve.
