this is courtesy of cosmic's post over at realgm:

*****

Starting point is the ewing trade denoted with horizontal green line. Plotted per month based on record. Interim plots of important transactions or injuries included and documented. Season ending plots extended horizontally in orange lines. It's not meant to be an exact science, it's meant to be both fun and enlightening.

Maybe download that actually and open in another program since some browsers like to crush images to fit a screen - thats not going to fly with this thing.

second source of same image if the above croaks out

Data used: (some revisions and double checks made during actual graph makings, this is kinda raw here specifically in how I noted end-month-day #s was just to guide plotting.)

it doesetn make sense cuz it says our record last year was better than the one before... what exactly is the vertical numbers? Looks like the Camby trade was really the horrible one

Man this shows we've just plain sucked for a while. Looks like we need a tough defensive interior otherwise we're going to remain mediocre to below average. It's interesting to see how much of an impact Camby had on this team while he was here. It also shows the true impact of 1 player gone(injuries/traded) vs say 2-3. We had very minimal positive numbers even when at full strength this season. Our +/- was more apparent before the last 2 seasons in which you would say if the last 2yrs were the rebuilding yrs shouldn't the +/- be more prevalent?

No it doesn't, at least that's not what I see. Here's the graphical chart if you're able to understand it

If the vertical axis is wins how can it be lower after a 33 win season than it was after a 23 win season?

From a Poster at Realgm
For those who are confused about the axis.......

the axis are measured by wins and losses.......

so for every win.....the line goes up.....and every loss the line goes down......

for example......in 04-05.......we had 33 wins........just like this season.........but this season we're much lower because we've continued to play under .500......

the graph is much more useful is you look at the short term trends......rather than the long term........

for example........we were MUCH worse is 2/02 then 2/07.........even though 2/02 is much higher...........but in the short term trend.......you can easily see we were much worse.

Because it takes the Net wins or loses of each season and starts from there the next year. So even though the knicks won 33 games, 23 games and 33 games, the accumlative total of losses is 49 losses year one, 108 year two and 157 year three. So if you only took those three years into account, that third year point is 158 losses subtracted by 79 wins or a net lost of 68 games.

Man we got a lot of winning to make up.
