Karl Benches Smith For Remainder Of Series

Nuggets coach George Karl, who said the Spurs had "out-tricked" the Nuggets in winning Game 3, is about to pull the dirtiest trick of the series on the Spurs: He's sitting mistake-prone J.R. Smith for as long as the series lasts.

"He's done," Karl said.

Asked if the ill-advised, 26-foot shot Smith launched when the Nuggets trailed by four points with 26.9 seconds remaining in Monday's Game 4 had been the "straw that broke the camel's back" for Smith, Karl nodded his head.

"That shot," Karl said, "I have no idea what planet that came from. And, of course, the one with eight seconds to go from 50 feet."

"I just love that," Karl said, his voice dripping with sarcasm, of Smith's heave near the end of the game. "I love the dignity of the game being insulted right in front of me."

Asked why he had played him in Game 4 after the costly mistakes Smith had made in Game 3, Karl defended his decision.

"He's a good-bad player," Karl said. "You evaluate his good and evaluate his bad. He had good plays in Game 3 and he had good plays in the game before that. But you've got to be mentally more secure and tougher than he showed in Game 4."

anyone catch JR's flagrant a game or two ago? i think it was on ginobili... what a punk. mardy gets him with a much less dangerous one and he's up jawing, then he pulls worse crap?

Have to like the Bulls saying thanks but no thanks to this kid. He is a real piece of trash, that actually made for of one of his teammates for reading.

I don't like the dude either. He has the skill and athletic ability to be sucessful but he is still way too immature.

He is still a young dude. He came straight from high school. Kid still thinks he's in high school. He already burned his bridge to NY, but he still has talent so the dude won't go away.

Which brings me to qyental woods.......

dj I was going to post this Karl crapped all over him in this article. That's what he deserves. This sounds like something ISAYUGH should have said to Nate during his tenure here but instead we make sure accountability is the furthest thing from it's players.

And George Karl is an arshole. How about all the times Steve Blake was forced to pull up these desperation shots?

I'm not even defending JR Smith. But man, George Karl has some loudmouth and puts an awful lot of pressure on these kids with some of the things he says to the media. There were about 5 million other things that went wrong with that team down the stretch. Karl has himself to blame as well. He's not that good a coach.

Giving credit to the Spurs defense is also a concept that makes sense.

JR is someone Isiah was hot to draft, if he hadn't shot our pick in the Marbury deal. He's an Isiah type player.

I'd consider it. Sometimes immature kids grow up and become mature men. How you separate the wheat from the chaff is the big question. You'd have to have some personal knowledge of Smith that led you to think that he would mature and handle himself better with a change of scene. I think if he was open to having a player like Q or Malik mentor him, it might work.
