We did this last year. Thought it's time to update it. What are you quick honest thoughts on Stephon Marbury. We'll do Eddie next, then Jamal, then JJ etc. Just give your overall thoughts. List weaknesses/write a paragraph. Just talk ball.

For me I like the way Stephon changed his attitude this year. He was on his way out early with his response to Isiah in that Chicago game, but to me acted like a man, without saying it, admitted his mistake and got his act together. From my point of view his overall game was tough to criticize after about Game 20. He's not a true leader so don't expect him to be one. He's not a talent that should be built around so dont' expect it to happen. But what he did do was give us very good play at the PG position. Solid D overall and at times Great D. Strong rebounding down the stretch. Ran the team well and scored. Nothing spectacular but everything above average to good in my view.

If I had complaints about him this year I would say it was the early going of course. I think after the guys went down to injury he still had a hard time juggling when to score and when to distribute. I don't expect him to ever get this part of the game entirely but I do like what he brought.

Overall no complaints about the guy. I think it was his best year in NY. I expect more of the same next year. I think he respects Isiah and will listen and learn again next year. It's a shame this didn't happen earlier in his career when he was more athletic. I do think it's time as a team that we look to groom a replacement. We have to decide now if Mardy is taht guy. If he's more of a combo guard it's time to bring in and groom a true point. This may even allow Steph to develop some leadership skills as he takes a PG under his wing(ala Barbosa).

strengths: doesn't matter
weaknesses: doesn't matter

he has 2 years left on his mega deal, and is going to probably call a career after that.

what he does here during that time...doesn't matter.

time to groom/look for his replacement.

I have a thought. The Clippers need a PG.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

his strength: Isiah loves him
his weakness: he's overpaid, over the hill and untradeable.

Oh- here's a positive for Marbury:

After 10 years in the league, 18 coaches and $80MM+++ in salary, he finally figured out how to try on defense.

Like Marbs game this year
Sad thing it's too late for NY and may be too late in his carier.
Still hope that he can extend it like Stokton or Cassell but it all depends on his health.
How long he can hold on and how much he can succeed without attacking the rim.
If he will get another star at the team (in NY or elsewere) he can be much more successfull.
He need a leader and looks like he is ready to play the support role.
Sad we have no chance to make it happened in NY.

Bip's post to start the thread is right on. As is Kam's.

Priority now has to be finding this team's next point. Maybe it is Collins, though I'm not convinced that he can be the steady hand the team needs. Don't have to be an all-star, just help get our TO numbers down.

Next year we will have a better idea, but I still think drafting a point in this draft needs to be a priority. Right now I'm praying that Acie Law gets hooked stealing some lap-tops and that Isiah learned from his mistake last year.

Lawd hear my prayer.

I'm with you. I think sooner rather than later we need to find a PG to pair and grow with Eddie. When one is available I think we need to hop on it. Looking at our roster I think the two most important intangibles we should look for in a PG are leadership and the ability to run the offense and move the ball instinctively. I don't think we have that right now.

I'd personally rahter see the team grab two differnet types of PGs with upside and be redundant at the position than select a mediocre one at another position. If there are no valid players in the draft I think we can target a cheap vet during the summer.

LA Prescription

Francis to LA Lakers
Marbury to LA Clippers

Collins/Crawford/Robinson hold down the fort, while we explore our options.

I think the timing is perfect. We can start to cut down Steph's minutes now,cuz I think Collins is going to be a capable backup and train for starting one day. We can play Steph as a SG next year and before someone tries to poo poo that Idea just remember that Steph is actually a more than capable scorer and defender at the SG position. This would save him from having to spend so much time at the point.

As for his career ending, lets just say that he still has enough left to help this team in the next 2 years and maybe a couple of years after that as a backup, but that's not what is most important to our future. Steph is 30 with tendonitis, but Kidd has actually had operations on his knees and he's 34. The key is giving more PT to Mardy and I think that will allow Steph to be more effective in less time. Steph is still a dynamic player when he needs to be and that can give us an edge when this TEAM is better and all we need is that extra push. You have to use players how they help you best. We finally have a guard who can grow to be a solid PG as far as i'm concerned in Mardy. Let him gain experience and get lot's of playing time. We can afford to do that. Just remember this is a marathon not a sprint. I'd rather spend more time developing our future than worrying more about today.

Bippity, I pretty much agree with your assessment of Marbury. He had a good year and if he can play like he did this year for the next two years, we will not have to worry too much about the starting PG spot.

I also agree that we need to start developing a backup pg as insurance for injuries and because we need another guy that can run the offense. Nate clearly cannot do it and Crawford is only decent at best at running the offense. Collins showed in his limited time that he knows how to run an offense and make a post entry pass, which are two things we sorely needed. If Mardy can develop his outside shot, he should be able to score enough to justify getting significant minutes next year. It is amazing that we all thought that Balkman was IT's great find, but Mardy has the chance to have just as much of an impact on this team next year.
