Sonics Owner: Lease Won't Keep Team From Moving
18th April, 2007 - 12:51 am

Seattle SuperSonics majority owner Clay Bennett said Tuesday that the NBA team likely will not play in Seattle beyond the 2007-08 season.

Bennett said Gov. Chris Gregoire won't call lawmakers into special session so the team can continue to push for taxpayer money for a new $500 million arena. And he said the Sonics will honor their KeyArena lease that runs through 2010 -- but most likely only through "a legal exercise."

"That may or may not mean the team will play there," Bennett said, knowing Seattle's NBA team for the last 40 years is obligated to stay in the city only for one more season.

"I'm not sure it makes sense to play there if relocation [is imminent]."

definitely Oklahoma city. they proved that they can and will support an NBA team with the Hornets. honestly it's a shame they can't find a way to split the home games and make the Hornets the first 2-city team or something. when you watch those games, those people LOVE their Hornets and they really supported that team in a difficult transition period.

Isn't the team owned by businessmen from OK City? No doubt about it if of course the Hornets actually can return to NO (still a mess).

It's ironic the Hornets are heading back to Nawlins seeing as how even before Katrina, they were in the basement in the league in attendance. They should stay in Oklahoma but it looks like that's where the Sonics are going.
