So basically he said black people today are lazy and ungrateful. They don't care enough about their past etc. They sell themselves out with pimp-ho rap lyrics and the profane. That they need to remember mamma Rosa Parks.

This doesn't really educate me about America though.

I guess you forgot the big ones like jim crow has modern sons now jim crow jr esquire. Instead of calling me a racial name , he just wants to marginalize your exsistence.

We can look for WMD in Iraq, but we couldn't see a hurricane in Lousiana that was there.

Going to Iraq has nothing to do with Jim Crow. Scores of Iraqis are dying everyday. What is their color?

Sharpton if you want to give him any credit, is telling black people that they are still victims of a racist system and not to forget it. The parallel with Louisiana seems to be that Sharpton is saying that as a people, they should not be complacent to dwell in the "poor" areas. These are the areas that were literally in the margin when the levees broke. Black people I think Sharpton is saying, can't expect anyone else to improve their lot just because Jim Crow is a thing of the past. The real system that created Jim Crow is unchanged and as such, Blacks will continue to be victimized and marginalized in terms of emergency response and national protection. Sharpton seems to be rallying his people to be smarter than the system wants them to be. The system wants them rapping about killing each other, the system wants them focused on materialism and extending their credit til it snaps. Black people, Sharpton seems to be saying, have to recognize the traps are still there, they are just harder to detect. At least back in the bad old days, you could see the racism. Feel it. Now its invisible, but still real. Never forget.

Thats my take on the spirit of the speech.

He mentioned Iraq because people were in New ORLEANS and they made it appear like they couldn't get help to find and get them out.

How did television reporters do interviews with people stranded if no one was able to reach the people.

But we can look and waste time and manpower in Iraq and come up with nothing.

On a broader scale if katrina was in a bigger city up north or in Cali they would have had help there in a NY minute.

That was one line in a Sharpton speech that went 10 minutes though. I think everyone knows the reason Katrina's shameful response happened is because the govt traditionally doesn't care about the poor. black or white. call an ambulance or a police from any poor neighborhood. do the same from a rich one. its a class thing, not a race one. what is racist is that the blacks are disproportionately occupying the lower class. and sharpton seems to want to light a fire under his people.

Just because black people are doing better than yrs ago, they still aren't treated as equals.

If you could be black for 1 week and traveled the country and got involved in different ventures and business worlds, you would have a different train of thought on this matter.

you do realize that getting a camera crew and a microphone into new orleans isn't the same as inserting, setting up and activating a massive centralized contingent of emergency rescue workers right? the situation was poorly mishandled, there is no question the federal government absolutely dropped the ball and failed to respond to katrina in every way. people who were left there have every right to be enraged. but let's be right here and actually think things through before we start making accusations pls.
