what do you guys think about him?? This is a general question. I myself have been looking at him and can't stop wishing the NYKs would draft him. I know our weakness right now is a SG/SF, but this guy is hugh, mobile and wants to actually play. I also know he is a bit raw but he is a scarry sight on the court. I would mind having him on the back burner for when curry's contract run out and we could at least have and option on tradeing curry or Hasheem Thabeet. That would put some leverage back into the team's hands and not the players.

Tell me how youguys see him. thanks

did he declare? briggs loved him earlier this year. i was not impressed. i'd draft him at 20-something, but a SG is a more pressing need. This kid could be great, but so far hasnt been. very young, very raw. in 2 years at UConn could go lotto pick

He needs to stay in school in my view. Defensively he can be a beast if he left today. But his time on the court will be limited(like Manute) if he doesn't develop an offensive game. He needs to stay in school another 2 years and let the Uconn staff do what they do, make great pros.
I just hope that people will like me

He looked like a potential top 5 pick in scrimmages before the year--he's going to impress some team with his athletiscm and size in a controlled workout but the kid needs to go to school. He's a player if you drafted--would be sitting for 2-3-4 years. I dont see us taking that route. If you look @ the progression of Hibbert--Thabeet is actually way ahead of him from frshmen year in many ways-but you know kind of what you are getting with hibbert now-thabeet????????????????????

Hes got a ton of raw talent but he's going to take a LONG time to develop. If I'm not mistaken, he's only played organized basketball for about 2-3 years.

Sounds like one of those projects that will take 30 years to develop.

Don't think he is coming out.

Funny you should ask because the possibility of him entering the draft hit the papers today.
Calhoun says Thabeet wants to stay, faces financial problems
By Associated Press
Thursday, April 12, 2007 - Updated: 09:52 AM EST

HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet would like to return to the school for his sophomore season, but must first determine if that is financially possible, UConn coach Jim Calhoun said Wednesday.
The 7-foot-3 Thabeet has until April 29 to declare for the June 28 NBA draft but will likely announce a decision in the next week, Calhoun said.
Thabeet, 20, is from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He was 14 when his father, Thabit Manka, an engineer and well known soccer player, died. Thabeet came to the United States to help ease the financial strain on his widowed mother, Rukia Manka, and two younger siblings a brother, Akbar, and a sister, Shan.

Calhoun said the family was relatively well off when Manka died, but is now facing some financial hardship.
”He wants to stay very badly,” Calhoun said. ”He’s just got to find ways in which some help can be given the mother. I don’t mean financial help. Maybe some type of work program, it’s very complex.”
Thabeet’s mother and an aunt have traveled to the United States to help Thabeet make his decision, Calhoun said. His siblings remained behind in Tanzania.
”He’s very happy at UConn, he’s very happy being a student,” Calhoun said. ”He just has some responsibilities that are a little unique from most kids, very unique from most kids.”
Thabeet has an insurance policy against being injured while in college, and would get a bigger one next year, Calhoun said. But unlike American players, he is not eligible for a Pell Grant or similar programs.
He can work during the summer.
Thabeet has been playing organized basketball for less than five years. Considered a raw talent, he averaged 6.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as a freshman. He also blocked 118 shots, and was named to the Big East all-rookie team. Calhoun said Thabeet would benefit greatly from another year in college.
Calhoun said he has no idea where in the draft Thabeet might be taken. But if he leaves school, and is not drafted high enough to secure a guaranteed NBA contract, Thabeet could face immigration and other problems.
”This is not a simple case of a kid wanting to go out, or not go out,” Calhoun said.
