Sources: Celtics To Offer Doc An Extension

Boston Herald -
According to league sources, the Celtics are prepared to offer Doc Rivers a contract extension following this season.
Rivers’ original four-year deal ends after next season, and he has stated he didn’t want to be in a lame duck position, though he did stop short of saying he would leave if the team didn’t extend his contract.
While the salary figures and length of the new contract have yet to be discussed, both sides seem willing and eager to get a deal done.
Neither director of basketball operations Danny Ainge nor Rivers would confirm the news, but both made clear their satisfaction with the way things have gone this season under circumstances that include a far too young roster and a series of key injuries.
this is what i don't understand. he is already under contract for next season. so why extend him? it makes no sense as an organization to do it. the team hasn't been winning so what's the point? look at toronto, sam mitchell and the raps agreed to wait until after the season. but management approached mitchell DURING the year for an extension. he said to wait till after the year. why? b/c he felt his message of being team first and unselfish would be contradictory if he decided to negotiate a deal during the year.
make players earn contracts. make coaches earn them also. there's no need to extend anybody unless they've earned it. and so far, doc has not earned it. he may not warrant being fired but he doesn't deserve an extension either. this is like chaney all over again.
