NABJ president Bryan Monroe asked Thursday if Imus had "lost his mind" and called for the veteran radio host's dismissal.

Imus was speaking with producer Bernard McGurk when the NCAA title game between Rutgers and Tennessee came up.

"That's some rough girls from Rutgers," Imus said. "Man, they got tattoos ... "

"Some hardcore hos," said McGurk.

NEW YORK -- Radio host Don Imus, as well as the radio station that produces his show, apologized Friday for calling the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy headed hos" on his nationally syndicated program. Stringer Responds

The National Association of Black Journalists demanded his immediate firing after the man known as "Imus in the Morning" put his foot deep in his mouth Wednesday. Imus questioned the players' looks, describing them as tattooed "rough girls." His producer compared the team -- which has eight black members -- to the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

"That's some nappy headed hos there, I'm going to tell you that," Imus said.

Imus, a member of the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame and one of the nation's best-known radio voices, is renowned for his caustic style and politically incorrect verbal broadsides. His show is syndicated to millions of listeners at more than 70 stations around the country.

WFAN-AM, the home of Imus' show, declined comment. At MSNBC, where the radio program is simulcast on television, officials offered Imus no support.

playa - Imus simply spoke what too many in the media, and in the country, honestly think

Nothing will happen because Imus brings ratings and ratings boost the bottom line.

But imagine someone with that much influence saying that to the world about your daughter or child.

Fork Imus and his kind

Upon Further Review

The awkward attempt at humor in the "Balkman Is White" thread only serves to symbolize the smallest tip of the iceberg when it comes to an honest understanding of how history (and communications media) has shaped the perception, descriptions and accounts of classes of people.

Imus is not alone in his thinking and his apology is totally unecessary.

He simply slipped up on the air.

What Will Happen

Imus will become an even larger celebrity as people focus on his words and not the context and culture that encourages those hateful words

People will forget to engage in any meaningful discussion to understand why such words have fertile ground to thrive in.

I still don't see what was awkward about the thread unless you didn't get it. To bring it up in this context is absolutely unfair to Bip and you should have had better judgment.

That said, Imus is a jackass. This particular comment is especially offensive because, to me, it directly challenges the image and womanhood of black females.

I still don't get how people can apologize for their remarks days after they said them, even though they know full well what they are saying. It's not like this just slipped out of his mouth or something. So stupid, whats the point of an apology if the person clearly knew what they were saying.

Imus in the Morning is the only thing that's imperfect about MSNBC. As a political junkie, I love all their evening shows, but I can't stand Don Imus. (Not because of this incident but just because he's weird!) I don't know what so many people like about him to justify him being on the air for three full hours every morning. Any Imus fans here who can explain it to me?

The FCC should stay out of it. We don't want the government making the decisions on what can and can't be said.

the themes found in radio television music and film continue to display less and less concern for deceny and morality each year.

I think Andrew raises a good point and I don't think religion is the best reasoning to argue against freedom of speech. We've seen where that can lead around the world.

But Mck does raise a very valid point that the regulation of speech may become more and more necessary - despite the potential of governmental abuse. With the incompetence of our current adminstration, its easy to champion freedom of speech of all forms. And if you accept the assumption that "good" ideas always endure in a "survival of the fittest" manner, then thats reasonable. But, empirically, I think we can say with confidence that its not always the "good" ideas that survive as the proponents of factions may believe - the majority is frequently likely to trample the minority for trivial gain.

From a medical standpoint, I can say with certainty that there a lot of impressionable people walking around. About 20% of all people reach an adult level of abstract thinking. So its easy to see that the introduction of poisonous ideas into the mainstream can affect the behavior of a huge population. I'm not idealistic enough to believe that prejudicial stereotypes will selectively die out - so I think, at some point, we may have to look to alternative solutions. Obviously, going in that direction is also difficult and opens the door for another set of violations.

Imus has a history of spewing racially insisitive garbage over the air for years. But like always, WFAN will back off because Imus is the captain that drives the ratings ship over there. MSNBC is hiding behind the "veiws expressed by the host doesn't necessarily reflect those of the station" nonsense.

Imus and his "Zoo crew" MGuirk the jerk all should be canned because as I said, this isn't the first and certainly will not be the last. If the FCC doesn't step in, then who?

Parents need to teach their children right and wrong and regulate what they watch and listen to. Take away the viewers\listeners and Imus and the like become a non problem.

i thought the point of the "Balkman is white" thread was taking a shot at stephen A. smith for saying Lee gets a pass because he is white, not suggesting balkman is white... because balkman plays similar to Lee, so is SAS going to say Balkman gets a pass for some other ridiculous reason, not necessarily because he's white obviously... maybe im wrong?

The problem is that 80% of those parents aren't even capable necessarily of a full conceptual understanding. Those people, for example, will tell you that if heads came up 4 times in a row, tails is more likely on the next toss. Unfortunately, their kids will also fail to achieve a mature understanding and the prejudice continues. So, practically speaking, I think its unlikely that parents, without some external pressure, will be a complete solution.

R u a black female? Do you have a black female mother, sister or daughter? This is a country that, for hundreds of years, has oppressed a race just because of their race. This starts from Slavery to Reconstruction era to the formation of Jim Crow Laws to the civil rights era to modern day times. Bigotry and racism go hand and hand although they are different. Point is, it's people like you who are indifferent to people spewing that stuff into society that HELPS to keep that type of ignorance alive and well. I could care less if the man is fired or stays. Nor do I care if his ratings go down or up. But it's actually the 'middle of the road/indifferent' people that keep this looooong lasting tradition alive. U well outnumber the ignorant dj's as well as outnumber the victims of that ignorance. The largest group seem to be the indifferent people.

Its pure racist for him to say that and it just spews racism the bob is reacting to it.

Micheal ray Richardson just got suspended and fined for saying Jews are crafty. If that idiot imus said those rutger hoes are crafty he wouldn't be in trouble.

Racism exists and like bob has proved, there is nothing anyone can do about it. Nowadays history is repeating itself and more people are feeling that its ok to say racist stuff, and say "what's the big deal?" or " I didn't mean it in a bad way".

Bob I'm assuming you are white but if you are black or any other race of color you are a moron.
