Q SURPRISE: Richardson said yesterday that he didn't know he would need back surgery until he arrived in Miami to see a specialist on March 29. Thomas had said that the Knicks always knew that Richardson would need surgery when they acquired him two years ago.
"Oh no, definitely not two years ago," Richardson said when asked if he believed he would need surgery. "Because it wasn't a major problem for me two years ago. This year was as bad as it got for me."
The Knicks acquired Richardson and his uninsured contract from the Suns despite his history of back problems. But Thomas told reporters last week in Dallas that the Knicks understood the risk they were taking when they made the deal for Richardson.
"None of us really expected it," Richardson said. "But when I went and got another MRI, that's when we saw I had to go get it."
