When Did It Become Cool to Hate Stephon Marbury?

March 30, 2007 10:01 AM

Yes, Stephon Marbury has recently managed to get some good off-court PR. But there's still a ton of hate out there. Dax-Devlon Ross wonders when that started:

When he demanded a lucrative contract from Minnesota and triggered the end of the potential "Dynasty" he and KG could've established? When he destroyed Keith Van Horn's confidence? When Jason Kidd took the Nets to the Finals a season after his departure? When Steve Nash turned the Suns around just one season after he left? When he claimed he was the best point-guard in the NBA? When he led the U.S. team to its first bronze medal in the Dream Team era? When he bullied Larry Brown out of town?

My answer to all those questions is: sure, maybe, kind of, all of the above, I guess.

But what's clear to me is that with Marbury, it's really not about this or that thing he may have done to fall from grace. Plenty of athletes do similar things. It's about the wins he hasn't managed to get (despite playing on all kinds of teams with all kinds of teammates) to make everyone forget all that.

I would suggest one additional reason might be how Marbury communicates. Every time I've read a quote from him, I couldn't help thinking he should keep his mouth shut, as he usually sounded like a dumb ass. I don't think he is, it's just that he sounds that way. Call it the George Bush syndrome.

Still, Marbury would have to be extremely erudite to overcome the image of self-centeredness he projects. "

when i started being critical of Marbury was when he duped me during his 1st season as a NY Knick... he came in being team oriented, smiling & getting along w/all his teammates, namely KVH, & that team was starting to gel... i actually started to believe he'd finally grown up & become the team leader this team needed... then Isiah trades KVH & Doleac for Tim Thomas & Nazr, & Marbury goes on to make his infamous declaration of being the best PG in the NBA, & starts glancing over at teammates for missed defensive assignments when it was his man he failed to keep on the perimeter... the excuses begin to flow from there as to why the team is incapable of winning year after year, & he fails to take any accountability for his own failures as the leader for this team... then he goes on to say he'll play any style of basketball he wants if the team isn't winning, & then caps it all off w/his media shenanigans w/LB last season that completely destroyed this franchise (LB was equally at fault obviously)

& from that moment on, he lost every benefit of the doubt in my eyes... until he can prove that he's committed to playing a winning style of basketball & leads this team deep into the playoffs, i'll probably never fully believe that this guy finally "gets it".
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

Steph reminds me of so many NY guys who have that overconfident attitude. They are nice guys when you know them personally, but if you don't they don't come across as likeable. I'm in the south now and people down here are really nice. People in NY are nice, but only once you get to know them. Usuallly the rude New Yorker stereotype is due to the nature of the culture in a big city. On an individual basis people in NY are actually very nice.

Steph is confident like many rappers are and he gives off that air. It's no different with AI, but since he's had more success with his teams people accept him being that way more. I've read several media guys who said that Steph actually deserved to go to a few more All Star games, but writers hated on him so much that no one seemed to appreciate his game anymore. He didn't have any drop off from his All Star years but the public perceived him differently.

TO me it's a lot about perception. If Derek Jeter was on the Brewers people wouldn't likely speak of him as highly. When McGrady was in Orlando, he was starting to get a lot of negative press, but now that he's with Yao and they are winning more he's back in good graces. It seems that now people are starting to like Steph again. What he's done this season has been noticed. If the Knicks have a good season next year I predict that the aging Steph will become a sentimental favorite. As the underdog people will like him more and pull for him to get a shot at a title.

i love how ESPN is the one writing articles about how Marbury's an overpaid, washed up has been, then they turn around and write an article asking where all the hate is coming from

I think people down south are more 'relaxed', not nicer than New Yorkers.

Yesterday I walked in a swarm of 5,000 people all trying to get to their train. Not one fight, no intentional pushing, no cursing (That I heard.) I find that to be truly nice and courteous, more so than saying hello to strangers or making conversation at the cash register.

I'm not knocking those Southern qualities, it isn't better or worse, just different. What I mean is New Yorkers are nice, we're just in a hurry and we don't have the time for pleasantries.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

What do you suggest he do at this piont, and what does he have to work with. As far as the rest of this season and the play off push, I'll take 20 & 8 if it = a W. We just dont have enough right now especially on the perimeter for steph to start passing up shots.
