Darryl Strawberry Jr. and Patrick Ewing Jr.

They may be like a Balkman type pick where nobody really expected them to get drafted but then shows promise like Balkman has once he gets on the floor. If you follow college basketball, then you should know that Strawberry was the defensive player of the year in the ACC this year who is a natural SG but can play the point, shoot the 3 and ofcourse defend. While Ewing plays the SF spot and can shoot the 3, good handles, rebound and defend. It would be SWEEEEEEEET if Isiah could somehow get a late pick or 2 and draft both of these guys who's dad's are NEW YORK HEROES !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall

Strengths: Has worked hard this past season to become a more consistent three point shooter … Ball handling ability and foot speed allow him to effectively take defenders off the dribble … Perimeter defense is among the best in the college ranks … Physically he possesses the tools of an elite defender … Quick hands, anticipation skills and great lateral movement … Does a great job of disrupting passing lanes … What may be even more impressive is his ability to effectively deny his man the ball out on the perimeter … Court vision enables him to see the floor well … Unselfish player who will look consistently for open teammates … Quality rebounder for his position where his athleticism and long arms aid him greatly … Moves well without the ball constantly attempts to run off screens and makes good cuts to the basket … Great NBA ready body that will enable him the comfort of adding more weight without sacrificing any speed … Possesses great body control on his drives … Plays the game with emotion and will display his competitive spirit in the heat of battle … First step allows him to gain separation from his defender … Feel for the game is advanced … Versatile guard able to rotate over and play the point guard position for a short time, as he showed taking over the position for his entire junior season … Excellent finisher in transition …

Weaknesses: Remains an inconsistent shooter from the perimeter … Can loose his confidence offensively if his shot isn’t falling early on … When this happens it’s uncommon for Strawberry to defer to teammates … Has the ability to create off the dribble but struggles to convert off the dribble … Tends to struggle when he has to play in a half court set as teams will often play him for his perimeter shot … Tends to force the action a bit as he will shoot difficult attempts … Must continue to improve his shooting off the dribble from mid-range … Must continue to improve upon protecting the ball when dribbling in traffic … Defensively Strawberry will at times overplay his man trying to gain easy steals … The result is that he often is out of position to effectively defend his assignment … Doesn’t finish at times after contact in the lane … Lacks the explosiveness to get his shot off over bigger opponents … Could be smaller than his listed 6-foot-5 ...

Notes: Son of former New York Mets star Darryl Strawberry.
Matthew Maurer - 3/18/2007
Strengths: One of the top defenders in college basketball ... Has great instincts off the ball, especially jumping passing lanes ... Is very tough on the ball, with good length and quickness ... Quickly developing a strong mid-range offensive game ... Good ball-handler, a result of playing point guard his junior year ... Can play in the post, especially against smaller players ... NBA ready body ... Can take over offensively at times ... A true team player ... At his best in fast paced games ... Very smart on the break ... Causes a lot of turnovers ... Can make an open three, and won't force poor shots ... Plays intelligent basketball ... Hustles constantly and shows a lot of emotion ... A solid athlete with great body control ...

Weaknesses: Streaky offensively ... Seems to hit hot spots and then fall off of the game at times offensively ... Doesn't look for his shots enough ... Occasionally caught out of position in zone defense, much better in man-to-man ... A gambler at times in the passing lanes ... Not a consistant threat from the perimeter ... Still developing offensive game ... Quick, but not lightning fast and doesn't have amazing athleticism ... Occasionally turnover prone when asked to run offense ... Not capable of running point properly ... Not a great free throw shooter ... Appears to be a small 6-5, could be 6-4 ...

Notes: Strawberry has been known as one of the ACC's toughest perimeter defenders since his freshman year, when he jumped onto the scene with a great performance in Maryland's 2004 ACC Championship off the bench. Was the Terrapins starting point guard for the 2005-06 season.

sleeper picks is all we have. trying to find a diamond in the rough. of course, the chances of that diamond being a stud are not that high. and therein lies the problem with our method of "rebuilding."

Also many diamonds that look good early on turn out to be glass.

We dont need a sleeper--we need a skill player who can step in and score points and hit their fTs:) I think the investment in balkman jefferies malik rose and jerome james--1/3 of the team? is enough in terms of acquiring players who do other *things* We need a point blank scorer.

How's about this kid?

Jared Jordan - Marist

NBA Comparison: Steve Blake
Strengths: Has a lot of point guard abilities such as the ability to control tempo, great court vision, high basketball IQ and veteran leadership … Patient player who keeps his dribble alive instead of over-penetrating and forcing passes … Great standstill shooter from the perimeter who can convert when left open … Surprising rebounder despite his strength/athleticism for his position … Strong player who understands how to use his body to shield off defenders on drives to the basket … Pesky perimeter defender, thanks to his footwork and anticipation skills … Hustler who has no problem doing the dirty work like diving on the floor for loose balls … Constantly looks to push the ball up the court to ignite the fast break … Great decision maker with the ball in his hands … Plays the game with a great deal of intensity and determination … Has no problem handling most defensive pressure due to his calm demeanor … Has three point range on his jumper … Decent finisher on his drives to the basket and can finish with either hand … Does an excellent of distributing to open teammates …

Weaknesses: Although decently quick, Jordan struggles to gain full separation from his defender … Inconsistent jump shooter who can go through big periods of hot/cold streaks … Could struggle to defend the NBA point guards due to his average lateral quickness … Not a great at shooting off the dribble or working off screens … Doesn’t have the body type that the NBA covets while listed at 6-2, could be shorter and lacks strength … To compound matters his arms aren’t long enough to make up for his average quickness … Has NBA range but lacks consistentcy to make 3s with regularity … Potential may be limited as he doesn’t appear to have very far to go before he reaches the ceiling … Can be a little turnover prone which to his credit is due in part to his team’s personnel as he is the only quality ball handler …
Matthew Maurer - 1/30/2007
Strengths: Outstanding ball-handler and passer ... Very consistant point guard who shows veteran leadership on the court ... Excellent on ball defender ... Good length ... Strong rebounder for a point guard ... Seems most comfortable when setting up his teammates ... Has shown the ability to drive to the hole ... Very good stamina, averaged 39 minutes per game as a junior ... Is a hustle player ... Aspires to be a coach, and shows great basketball IQ ... Very crafty player around the basket, both passing and shooting ... Soft touch around the basket ...

Weaknesses: Struggles when forced to carry team ... Not a great three point shooter ... Has a tendency to turn the ball over at times from trying to do too much at once ... Lacks experience playing against great competition in the MAAC conference ... Not very athletic or fast ... Could be overmatched in NBA by much quicker or stronger point guards ... Has an uphill climb to make it in the NBA athletically ...

Notes: Averaged 8.5 assists as a junior, leading the nation.

Strawberry got toasted by Stephen Curry, Dell Curry's kid in the first round. Everyone knew the ball was going to Curry, the D. collapsed on Curry on every play. Still Strawberry got toasted throughout the game. He's an okay player but a back-up at best. Oddly, even though Davidson's barely a division I team, I'd focus on Curry rather than Strawberry. Curry may be small and untested but it looks like he has more game and more smarts than Strawberry.
