NEW YORK (AP) -Fullback Vonta Leach signed an offer sheet for a four-year contract with the New York Giants on Monday.

The Houston Texans, Leach's current team, have seven days to match the deal, worth more than $7 million. If they don't match, Leach becomes a Giant.

"It's a good deal for a fullback," agent Ralph Vitolo said. "The Giants are obviously one of the best organizations in the NFL, they have an excellent quarterback (Eli Manning) and a great offense Vonta could probably excel in. They are a playoff or Super Bowl team."

With escalators, the contract could top out at $8.5 million for Leach, who was tendered by the Texans for just $850,000, meaning they won't get any compensation if they don't match the contract.

The 25-year-old Leach played two seasons with the Packers, appearing in 22 games, but had no rushes for the Packers. He was cut last September by Green Bay and joined the Saints, but soon was cut again and went to the Texans. He had six receptions and one touchdown catch for Houston.

A 6-0, 250-pound blocking back, Leach would team with tailbacks Brandon Jacobs and Reuben Droughns for New York.

i guess Jim Finn is out?

Yeah, the Giants are looking to move to a more powerful run game and Finn was a "Finesse" blocker of sorts. Not a guy who blew up LB's, but was good at find paths for Barber. Wali Lundy had a quote yesterday...said something like LB's were afraid of Leach. He was knocking people down late last year. Texans can match the offer, but the Giants won't have to give up any draft picks to sign him.

Jacobs, Droughns & Leach will make for a powerful backfield, that's for sure... time to get back to some good ol' fashioned smashmouth football!

until ELI and COUGHLIN are gone, i have a hard time rooting for the giants.

that said, i'm hoping its both of their last years, so there is reason to believe. that is one massive backfield.

give me JARED LORENZEN. i love that guy, plus he's huge too. the giants would have a bigger backfield than most teams linebacking corps.

the ? is who do they draft? i love the eraser, reggie nelson from florida, i'm hoping he falls. giants need a playmaker on D in the 2ndary.

forget about Eli going anywhere anytime soon... the Giants bought out his option so he'll be around til at least 2012.

definitely agree w/u about needing a playmaker in the secondary... Demps is good against the run but on coverage he's not a playmaker... we need an Ed Reed type presence in the defensive backfield.

The Lorenzen over Eli thing is just flat out illogical. Really there's no universe where it makes sense. You can not like Eli, but like it or not, he's still not a finished product. Results wise, he's still an above average NFL QB. Why is Lorenzen, an undrafted, morbidly obese QB (you gotta question the committment of an athlete who is that fat) with a slow release and questionable decision making ability going to be a better option? B/c he's a freak show and fun to root for and Eli makes ugly looking faces when he throws INTs?

As for Nelson, there's a 50-50 chance he'll be there at 20. If he is I'd draft him...he can be another Dawkins. Patrick Willis and Dwayne Bowe are there two guys I'm thinking of there (Willis will probably go earlier).

The Texans initially told the Star Ledger they matched this, and now they just told the reporter they did not. My guess is they messed up the math and will eventually match.
