Flynn wins Mr. Basketball honor
By Milt Northrop NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

Jonathan Flynn’s basketball season with Niagara Falls ended abruptly 10 days ago, but the honors keep coming for the Wolverines’ star guard.

One of the most prestigious is news that Flynn has been named Mr. Basketball of New York by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. Niagara Falls coach Giulio Colangelo said he was notified of Flynn’s selection last week by BCANY officials.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” said Flynn, who learned of the honor Tuesday from Colangelo. “I wish I could be sharing this with my team. It’s not that I’m not ecstatic about it. I just wish we were still playing.”

Flynn averaged 26.7 points and six assists a game this season. For his career he had 1,773 points. During Flynn’s four seasons on the Niagara Falls varsity the Wolverines compiled a 103-10 record. He started 83 of 113 games in his career.

Niagara Falls (20-3) was looking for a seventh straight Section VI title and fourth straight trip to the state final when it was upset by Sweet Home, 66-64, in the sectional Class AA championship game at Buffalo State on March 3.

Flynn admitted that it’s been difficult putting the loss to Sweet Home out of his thoughts.

“When it’s all over and the state championship game is played, that’s when I think I will really get over it,” he said. “It’s still hard to believe we’re not playing, but Sweet Home was the better team that night.”

The Syracuse University-bound Flynn is only the third player from Western New York to be honored as the state’s Mr. Basketball.

Keith Robinson of Grover Cleveland in 1986 and Leonard Stokes of Turner-Carroll in 1999 were previous winners from the Western end of the state. Robinson went on to play at Notre Dame. Stokes starred at Cincinnati.

Previously the 6-foot, 172-pound Flynn was named to the Parade Magazine All-America Team as well as the McDonald’s All-America team. He is the first player from Western New York to be selected a McDonald’s All- American since Christian Laettner of Nichols School in 1988.

Flynn will play in the 30th annual McDonald’s All-America game March 28 at the University of Louisville’s Freedom Hall. That game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

On April 3, he will play in the Original Roundball Classic in the United Center in Chicago. Flynn will play for the West All-Stars against the East.

A member of the USA Men’s U-18 National Team last summer, Flynn has been named to the 2007 USA Basketball Junior National Team that will compete in the 10th annual Nike Hoop Summit in the FedEx Forun in Memphis, Tenn. on April 7.

“I’m going to be pretty busy this spring, which is good. I want to keep improving,” he said.

Flynn, who turned 18 on Feb. 6, is the son of Deidre and William Flynn.

Really look ing forward to see he and Paul Harris and Devondorf blow up next yr at the Cuse..... show time at the cuse will be backkkkkkkkkkkk
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

that's going to be an interesting team. Harris has to be able to play the 2 though or the zone won't work with all those shorties.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
