CBS 2 Exclusive Video: 'March Badness' At MSG!
Brendan Keefe
Reporting

(CBS) NEW YORK There's March Madness, and then there's March Badness.

A wild melee broke out at a high school basketball game inside Madison Square Garden on Sunday night between high school students, police officers, and others in attendance. The fight then spilled into the streets, and at one point shots were fired, police said.

CBS 2 has exclusive video of hundreds of fans fighting in the stands and of NYPD officers racing through the streets in response to continued violence. Cops reportedly made 21 arrests, though that number could still grow as the details of the melee are finally sorted out.

Fans got into a brawl with each other and police during the Public Schools Athletic League's AA division city championship game between Brooklyn rivals Lincoln and Boys & Girls.

Once the melee started, the public address announcer inside the Garden could be heard saying: "What the (bleep) is wrong with y'all? Come on!"

The first image CBS 2 cameras captured was a girl slapping a boy. The boy then swung around and tried to punch her. Other boys jumped him and then the NYPD moved in.

Things eventually began to calm down, but the battle, as it turns out, was far from over.

Another image showed a cop pulling a fan over a railing and then other cops joining in as they beat him with Billy clubs.

The male, who was wearing a brown jacket, was pulled over the railing by school safety officers and appeared to not be resisting, but four officers are seen beating him. Two of the officers struck the boy several times with their batons.

The entire episode started on the court after a hard foul was called. Lincoln point guard Devon Petersen was then pushed by Boys & Girls' Frederi Nixon. However, Petersen went after Boys & Girls' Antonio Johnson, thinking he had shoved him. Referees separated the two players.

However, the incident ignited several fights in the stands.

As more and more NYPD officers started showing up, the huge brawl spilled out into the streets, and the violence continued.

Police said shots were fired as the crowd moved from the Garden to Times Square, and then into a subway station, where cops and teens continued to clash.

The NYPD called in reinforcements, including officers on horseback, on scooters and in riot gear.

CBS 2 cameras followed police officers as they ran down into one subway station that serves the 1, 2 and 3 lines to respond to screams for help.

Some of those involved in the brawl are believed to have escaped on subways.

So, when all the dust settled from the fight, who won the game? Lincoln trounced Boys & Girls, 77-50.

So someone explain this to me. If there were gunshots fired, and the fight started INSIDE MSG, then did the person with the gun come from inside the garden? If so, we got some serious issues here.

MOST of the times I go into the garden, they don't pat my down or put me through a metal detector. I just don't understand how people aren't concerned about this.

anybody know anything about lance stephenson? I keep hearing he's the next big thing in ENYCE.

PS speaking of security at the garden, i'll never forget i was in the 400s on february 28th, 2004....anyone.....ok it was patrick ewing's retirment ceremony, knicks vs. the magic i believe, and the game went into two overtimes. after the 3rd quarter a lot of people left and by the intermission of OT1 and OT2 the 400s were practically empty as many filed down into the lower levels to get to the empty seats. a guy with a knicks hat that blinked like one of those vegas signs pulled a bowl out of his pocket and smoked weed for probably 10 minutes (and no, it wasn't cliff robinson or bc's sean williams). i always thought that was funny i mean this wasn't a concert it was a frekaing knicks game and heres this guy, packing bowls and getting high, no security guard in site.

I was wondering what the hell was going on yesterday. Those kids totally screwed up the trains yesterday! There were kids fighting in the times square station. There was an unbelievable amount of kids on the platform. Lots of them thought it was funny. There were countless cops too. Some of the kids were screaming on the cops and they were on the train acting up. Crazy.

Its a major problem. The youth are all spoiled brats. In all my years on earth I never seen such crazyness. Kids nowadays don't care. They act wild yet they are all more dressed up than cam'ron in a dipset video.

Sorry to say but everyone around 40 with kids have totally ruined their kids. That includes anyone with kids in junior high or high school.

Good job parents!

Damn from the Garden, to the street, to the subway. That was one mean brawl.

There had to have of been a lot of negative build up leading toward the game or something. Probably could make a movie on it.

That's Real Talk as they like to say around these neck of the woods. Everyone is trying to be a piece of something legendary and will do stupid things to see where it leads. New York is so watered down with hype vs substance. Everything has to have shock value and be brand new.

"Hey Yo Son the streets is comin out with a new PSAL DVD series Yo. They gonna highlight the Brwal that happened in 07 and I was the one that started it Yo. I started it at the Garden, took to the streets, and blasted my Tical on Busters. I even had to Buck 50 a Cluck. Make sure you cop that Fam, Early"!.........One!

ESPN will then proceed to show it 100x in one day

It's like STFU, cut the clowning BS and stop Gimmicking up everything.

I was there, security was at least 5 times a normal Knick game (tons of NYC cops) and they still had a lot of trouble handling it.

Also they had metal detectors set up airport style and everyone had to remove belts, etc before entering. Therefore, the gun probably came from someone who didn't go inside, but who knows.

Why not just enjoy the game?

When I was in highschool we had a game with our rival that had similar results. Guy fouls another guy, they bump chest to chest. One guy gets shoved. Fans escalate and start fighting each other. Brawl breaks out. Countless people arrested. Kids suspended. Game re-scheduled to be played without fans. Game goes to double overtime. Fans miss it all. And for what? Stupidity.
I just hope that people will like me

THIS IS HOW YOU DETER FIGHTING AT MSG FOR HIGHSCHOOL GAMES

1. When you have a party, or go to a club or have a hotel stay, if you say FREE!!! you can expect "free folks". If you would have charged $5.00, you would not have had a fraction of the fights that took place. $10.00 and you would have had no fights. To the people that party, when they go to a club where the ladies get in free before 11PM...Those are the mustache, crooked wig chicks that smuggle in liquor in shampo bottles.

2. In addition to the School Safety officers, you need good old fashioned FIVE OH, NYPD lock and loaded and set up with a mobile unit to deter those "two strkie and hitting foul ball" characters.

3. NO NIGHT GAMES!!! THe moon brings out the werewolf in young people. Noon and 2PM will kill all of the "critters and losers" and keep the actual fan in attendance.

4. Limit the Brooklyn residents. they are the closest thing to "300" in society. Word they run like Spartans.

5. Have some affordable MSG food where the natives are not "starving" because of the concession stand prices. Subsidize some meals or allow school lunch check in or even better yet, serve some Soul or Spanish Food. Everybody will be sleep and too tired to fight.
