Ainge Fined for Contact With Durant’s Mother
Posted Mar 18 2007 5:39PM

BOSTON, March 18, 2007 (AP) -- The Boston Celtics confirmed Sunday that the team had been fined $30,000 by the NBA for excessive contact with the family of Texas star freshman and likely lottery draft pick Kevin Durant.

General manager Danny Ainge sat next to Durant's mother during the Big 12 tournament. The league said Ainge violated rules demanding that contact be kept to a minimum between team executives and potential NBA draft picks, until college players officially declare for the draft.

Sports Illustrated first reported the story on its Web site.

Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said Ainge is on the road scouting players and he did not offer specifics of the fine.

The Celtics won in San Antonio for the first time in 17 years Saturday, topping the Spurs 91-85. At 20-46 on the year, the team has the league's second-worst record behind the Memphis Grizzlies.

There are a bunch of dimwits running these teams nowadays. Between him, Isiah, McHale ("lets keep the evidence around"), Knight and King. I can throw others under the bus but these guys have got my ire. I read a report that Ainge did more than just sit next to her. He had an ongoing conversation and was outted by his fellow GMs. At least he didn't work him out with the Celtics. That honor still belongs with the Cavs. Worked out Lebron in 2002, while he was still a junior. Stern was furious but didn't want to push it. Had to make sure that Lebron stayed in Cleveland. Can't be mad at the guy. He did deliver Ewing to the Knicks.

If Boston drafts Durant, they should definitely be good next year. They have alot of good young talent. If Wally and Pierce can stay healthy, I would not be surprised to see Boston win 40+ games next year. Not a great record, but seeing how they are only going to win about 25-27 games this year, it would be a major improvement.

The punishment on cases like this should be simple. If you're caught, you are restricted from drafting any player you had illegal contact with. That should stop this stuff once and for all.

It's sounds awfully subjective. You're allowed to have contact with the player and his family. It's just can't be *excessive*. That's retarded.

wait- I can't even believe that ainge having any contact should be allowed- his mother could effectively be acting as his agent, and ainge could have said- if we pick in top 3, we'll take him.

So, he can declare knowing he has a top three pick assured.

i don't see the point in this rule... seems silly to me... i say let all the lottery teams carouse all they want w/these kids & their families before the draft... it's a multi-million dollar gamble these teams are taking on drafting these kids that holds the entire future of their franchises in the balance... so what if they're having dinner together or sitting next to each other at a game? i'd rather have teams do that then see us waste a 1st rounder on a stiff like Frederic Weiss who doesn't even decide to show up to play on the team.

It's to protect Durant. He's a student. NCAA doesn't allow him to have an agent. He can't be fending off NBA execs left and right. He's got finals to worry about.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

the only thing he needs to worry about is staying healthy & keep putting up those #'s... he's gonna be a millionaire regardless of what grades he gets on those finals.

DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.
