Coming off todays big effort, here are Balkmans up to date numbers per 48 minutes this season

14.2 ppg
13.2 rpg
2.6 stl
2.22 blk
48.5% FGs

He is the Knicks best shot blocker per 48 minutes. He leads the team in steals per 48 minutes. Only David Lee tops him on the team as a rebounder per 48

In fact, his rookie year is eerily similar statistically to David Lee's rookie year:

Per 48 minutes rookie season:
Lee- 14.5 ppg, 12.8 rpg

Balkman 14.2 ppg 13.2 rpg

Don't mistake the following comment, because Im not comparing him to a multiple time all star, but his rookie campaign is also basically equal to that of Shawn Marion on a per 48 basis, and he plays a remarkably similar game. Both natural 3s who are excellent rebounders for the position and excellent defensive players, lacking much of a perimeter game. Marion has developed a passable jump shot though, if Balkman can ever do that there is no doubt in my mind he can be a guy who averages around 15 and 9, with well above average defense

Thoughts?

IMHO, this summer will be HUGE for Balkman in terms of what his career will be like. If he can markedly improve just 1 aspect of his game this summer (FT%, jumpshoting, ball handling, man-to-man D, help D, anything) he will show me that he has the potential become quite the NBA starter and more.

Ditto that, Martin. I would just LOVE to see Balkman come into camp next year with a decent midrange jumpshot, if he ever does that.. watch out.

Interesting comparions -- Marion.

If he works on his shot, def.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Balkman definitely makes you forget about Ariza...

If Balkman and Lee had decent jumpshots we'd be in very good shape for years to come. You'd think these guys would know how to shoot already. I guess that's why we got them late in the first round. We need to hire the best shooting coach money can buy.

Well, it's exactly what Bip says. Coaches don't wanna take the time from working on plays and stuff by working on fundamentals, and shooting is about as fundamental as you can get. Balkman and Lee are gonna either have to work at it on his own, or hire somebody with their own money to help them out.

Balkman and Lee are very similar players. I am a huge Lee fan but even I can admit the ceiling might be higher with balkman. Balkman just needs to learn how to play within the offense. No more sutpid 3 point shots in the wrong situation and such. He seems to have been smarter lately. I don't know that he will ever have the basketball iq of lee but I think it is close and he can make up for it with other things like being slightly quicker and having a slighty quicker reaction time.

I pray Lee and Balkman develop jumpshots and Lee learns to play better defense. With those two flanking Curry, we don't need to worry about Curry's lack of rebounding and Balkman can help protect the paint. Our future is resting on how these two kids develop over the summer.
