LOS ANGELES -- Former NBA player John Amaechi became the first openly gay male athlete to sign an endorsement deal with a mainstream company.

HeadBlade Inc., creators of a popular head-shaving razor, announced Monday it had signed Amaechi to a multiyear deal. Financial terms were undisclosed.

"I think it's fantastic that HeadBlade has approached me to endorse the brand,'' said Amaechi in a statement.

Amaechi became the first NBA player to acknowledge his homosexuality with the release of his memoir, "Man in the Middle" in February. The book is currently on The New York Times Best Seller List.

Concern about endorsement deals is one reason some male athletes stay in the closet during their careers.

"John Amaechi is the newest face of the brand because he embodies many of the qualities representative of a HeadBlader," HeadBlade chief executive Todd Greene said. "He is a man comfortable in his own skin and he's not afraid to go against the grain."

Amaechi grew up in England and played over five seasons for Cleveland, Orlando and Utah. He retired in 2004.

His whole coming out thing was a promotion for his book. The guy is looking to get paid. Nothing wrong with that, but people were acting like this guy was some courageous hero. The guy came out because he knew it would sell his books and get him endorsements. Obviously it takes some courage to do what he did, but believe me, if he was not looking to get paid with his book, you would not have heard about him coming out.

It ain't like they sitting around with nothing to do and then all of a sudden think that since "meech" came out, Im gonna be like him! IT ain't like that! Gay teens who are trying to keep hidden their secret might see that its ok to come out and live a life! Your suggesting that they choose that life.

We understand your point. Lots to not agree with. But its ok to disagree.

Would I buy a razor cuz the meech endorses it? Yeah, cuz nobody take care of themselves better than a gay man, and if a razor is good enough for a gay man, its good enough for me!

I was referring to to kids who are pursuing professional sports careers like the NBA NFL MLB.

Staying in the closet is the norm in those sports while you are actively playing, my point is what if some try to comeout before or while they are pro athletes because of his Amachei's exposure ?

What if they try to come out? Then the Meech is a freakin hero if the players are accepted.

It would have to be a star player above critique in my opinion. If Jordan came out during his peek what would have happened. Most players would have respected him and Nike stock would have done even better. Maybe the "jumpman" logo would have been the "skipman" logo instead but most would have been cool.

KVH comes out and he is clotheslined in 10 min on the court. Same for Camby.

That was ostensibly Amaechi's reason (other than getting paid) for coming out. So that 5, 10, 20 years from now, being gay and a professional sports figure will not be such an outlandish notion.
