From the NYT

>>Francis is scheduled to earn $40 million over the next two years, including his remaining income from this year's contract. Francis and the Knicks had negotiated a buyout for approximately $30 million. According to a source, Francis was convinced that he could sign for the mid-level exception over the summer to make back the money.

When you factor in the luxury tax, the Knicks would have saved approximately $20 million by releasing Francis.

"Jim gets killed for a lot of things, but you have to give him credit for doing whatever it takes to win," the source said. "He could have saved a lot of money but he wants to give the team every chance to reach the playoffs."

As part of the agreement, the Knicks planned to release Francis before March 1 because any player cut after that date is prohibited from being on a playoff roster. The news on Crawford's injury was announced on Feb. 27.

What source says such a thing? Sounds like an insider member of the Cablevision department of puplic information.

Or Nixluva?

Would have been typical of Knicks to let Francis go and then are short at guard. Liturary!

Then Fran takes his act to a playoff team and makes a run with them while Nate gets starters minutes.

I'll give Dolan one bit of credit, he seems to have the ability to identify mistakes and at least pay up to move on.

Too bad his mother was not so smart!

The guy is doing all those silly things that Larry wanted him to do. Cut and run.

I am totally convinced that if given two years and no financial constraints Larry would have fundamentally changed botht he roster and the charactor of this team.

I think this years record might not have been much worse or better, but the team might have started to grow some balls on them.

The seattle game showed the team does not have a killer instinct.

Seems like we are doing it similar things now but in fashionable "Isiah" style instead of the media talking grumpy style.

Either way we have "Arthur" running this team!

Maybe that's why isiah let out that primal scream when he found out craw was out for the season.

The knicks could have still did it and just signed somebody. I guess keeping francis and having him play would increase his trade value. francis still wants to be the man somewhere, you can see that.

So now we have the truth.

STEVE FRANCIS WAS NEVER THAT BADLY INJURED!!!!!!

I never believed it anyway but it just goes to show the games that are being played by this franchise towards it's fan base and employees. The fans keep taking it and that's what's so hard to understand.

So Jamal prevented Francis from reuniting with his life partner?

You gotta love how many players the Knicks are paying more than their current/past teams the past 3 yrs. It's like 10X more on average.

It just blows my mind that Dolan is so ****ing dumb

They just spent

20 million on Larry
15 million on Jalen
9 million on Mo
5 million on JJ add the luxury tax
5 million on James
10 million to Lenny

And were going to give 20 million to francis, Isiah is a joke! I have never seen one man cost a team so much money and get a free pass because we are 7 games under 500 and are in the thick of a playoff race.....

Mr Dolan is very charitable man...
The only problem charity money are going into wrong pockets.
And kids are dying from hunger and HIV in Africa in bunches.
Sad world...

I only care about money spent on players. We could pay our coaches in booze or women for all i care. We could layer the coaches chair with diamonds and give the GM his own private jet also layered with diamonds. It aint my concern. I do get upset when MLE money is wasted because that hurts the team. I don't care that Dolan has to pay some ex coaches or bought out players.

Just because it isn't our money doesn't mean that we can't appreiciate the fact that msg frequently wastes absurdly large amounts of money, which is a sign of poor management. Anyway, I wouldn't care if francis was bought out. In fact, I think it would help this team out by simplifying the rotation (although not right now obviously because of all the injuries). However, it would mean that we basically gave a promising young player in trevor ariza away for nothing, except for the burden of paying 30 million dollars to the marginally talented francis for a couple of months of service. not a great transaction there.

Although to be honest, Im not even really all that concerned about that. After all, every team makes financial blunders sometimes, (just look at all that money erick dampier makes). What I'm most concerned about is the fact that Isiah seems to be unable to establish a plan for this team that extends a couple of seasons into the future and successfully carry it out. that puts us at a disadvantage to other teams in the league with better GM's in my opinion.

Question is... Would we/Should we have re-upped Ariza? IF not, then the deal is a wash.

He's due $40 M total in the next 2 years, so he'll be bought out for around 30 M, no ?

Francis is getting "ripped off" if he settles for 20 M.

That totals to 64 M. Our total buyout payroll (excluding Baker, Anderson, and JYD) is higher than most team payrolls.

I wish I was never a fan of such losers who wear jerseys and suits.

JrHustla - all you gotta do is cahnge the channel. It ain't that deep.

With that said, the amounts of money being paid to athletes are obscene when regarded in the harsh light of international poverty.

what was Beckham offered?
