For those of you who are ready to enter the Twilight Zone that is the NBA Trade Deadline, we see yet another modest proposal to instantly make the Knicks that title winner they aim to become. The salaries in each of the following scenarios do match courtesy of RealGM's own Trade Checker. Readers and trader-wannabes beware.
Imagine the following scenario:
NY Trades:
Malik Rose Channing Frye Nate Robinson 2007 1st Round Pick (Possibility 50-50)
Seattle Trades:
Rashard Lewis
NY Trades:
Steve Francis Mardy Collins Jamal Crawford
Cleveland Trades:
Larry Hughes Drew Gooden Eric Snow
Summer:
Kevin Garnett signs with the Knicks for the MLE.
New York enters 2007 with the following line-up to contend for a 2007 Title:
PG: Marbury/Snow SG: Q-Rich/Hughes SF: Lewis/Balkman/Jeffries PF: KG/Lee C: Curry/Gooden
Trade 1:
Seattle might be looking for a new Home and/or Owner soon, and with the 2nd of their two-star tandem possibly heading out the door for nothing, they may look to capitalize for the future. In this Trade scenario they get wildly popular Seattle native Nate Robinson (former Washington standout), and young rising F-C Channing Frye.
Imagine Wilcox in post with the ball, gets trapped, pops it back out to Allen who then gets doubled, he swings it to the other side to Nate for the Three. Or, Allen is doubled, penetrates into the Lane taking both defenders with him...he pops it back out to Frye who hits the Mid-Range shot like Butter. Both of these Players when paired alongside rugged post Player Chris Wilcox, and Perimeter sharpshooter Ray Allen will offer up a balanced young Seattle Team for the Future with the added possibility of gaining a 2007 1st Rounder, and have the ability to still move Ray Allen and Earl Watson/Luke Ridnour.
Trade 2:
The Cavaliers desperately need a legit PG to pair alongside LeBron and Big Z. Even though Eric Snow is a pass-first PG his Offense is atrocious, and Defenses can just double or even triple team Lebron at will. In return, they get a legit former three-time All-Star PG in Steve Francis, who can fill up the highlight reels alongside Lebron for alley-oops and dunks. He can rebound, pass, steal and score. Everything the Cavs need in an upgrade over Snow and Damon Jones.
With the disappoint of Larry Hughes not panning out to be what the Cavs and GM Danny Ferry were expecting when they signed him to the big Contract to be Lebron's running mate in the open court, and to nail the occasional three, they get another upgrade. Jamal Crawford is cheaper, and more versatile. He can hit the Open 3, and take it to the hole for a plethora of And-1's. The Cavs also receive a future Eric Snow who's bigger and more fundamentally sound in Collins at 1/6th the Price. With a lineup of Francis, Crawford, James, Varejao (or Marshall), and Big Z, the Cavs will be the legit Title Contenders many were expecting them to be the last few Years.
Summer:
Now comes the hard part. If KG does opt out of his ridiculously huge deal, for a legit chance at a Ring, NY would have laid the groundwork. He'll take a salary cut for the final two years of his deal but being in the World's Most Famous Arena and having a chance to bring to NY what Ewing couldn't, will be a very tempting offer. Plus, all the endorsement deals wouldn’t hurt either (is that David Stern I hear knocking?).
With Marbury at PG, Q-Rich and Lewis manning the Wings to nail three-pointers, Curry manning the Post, KG in the Mid-Range, and Lee/Gooden cleaning up the Boards on missed shots...Could a mini-Dynasty be formed?
Could the late 60's early 70's Knicks be re-incarnated?
Shhh....Pipe-Dreams are on the loose.
Would have been real cool if it happened.
What's Defense?
