Kevin Garnett, the Wolves' All-Star forward, made it pretty clear after the shootaround Friday morning that he was not happy with the stand-pat approach.

"We made no moves. Typical," Garnett said in a raspy voice, apparently fighting a cold.

Asked if he had been hoping for a trade to boost the team's playoff chances, Garnett responded: "We're trying to get better, right? It is what it is."

A couple of minutes later, after some comments about Phoenix, he offered a glimpse at how "not happy" he really was.

"Thank God for opt-outs," Garnett said as he wrapped up the brief interview.

that's kind of out of character for KG, he has always been very defensive when asked about possibly moving saying he wants to stay in Minn. but hey, Iverson packed up and left Philly so anything is possible.

I didn't realize he could opt out after this season. That's awesome for him. The Wolves screwed him so bad.

His opt-out is after next year, but I think he's going to be gone this off-season because the T'Wolves are going to want something in return.

If he opts out he just becomes a free agent? Or a restricted free agent?

I think opt-out makes him unrestricted but the Wolves could probably pay him more than anyone else.

Believe it or not, I think he wants that ring so I see him going to either Miami or the Lakers.

My favorite thing about KG is he took his 20+ million and then demanded that the organization resign Hudson and Hassell for big money screwing the cap for years, frankly its his own fault just ask for a trade.....

One of the great mysteries is how kevin mcchale is even employed that guy doesn't know anything about basketball off the court....

Cassell for Jaric and giving the clippers a pick
Joe Smith disaster
Giving big contracts to madsen, hudson, hassel
Draft McCants over Green or Granger
Signing Mike James after finally doing something smart by drafting Foye

The guy is terrible, KG deserves what he gets, demand a trade no one will fault you

Why not? He's a lot better value than two overpaid $10 mil+ guys. For example (note: clarification before some idiot harps on this and says "Wolves would never do that trade, etc....", I'm proving out the salaries, not suggesting a trade), Francis + Frye = $19 mil. For a team with no high priced players, no, but I'm sure some team out there thinks he's the piece that puts them over the top and would make a trade if they had some expirings to deal.

P.S.: My note above was not directed at anyone in particular, but people seem to be putting words in my mouth lately, so I want to make sure I'm perfectly clear.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

the question is about him opting out of his contract to get a better one... this has nothing to do w/teams being willing to trade for him... what team out there is going to pay him $20 million annually on a new contract if he decides to opt out? who even has the cap space to do it?

Oh, you mean who can sign him to $20 mil? Good point. I was more thinking he could threaten to take a smaller contract and try to force the Wolves into trading him. I agreed with an earlier opinion that I can't see Min letting KG go free. Frankly, KG has critized management so much, that I can't see why they'd want to hold onto him for the next xyz years. And maybe... just maybe... KG might want to win so badly that he'd sign somewhere for less than his value (e.g.: like $12 mil a year, etc...).

But you're right, nobody has $20 mil under the cap to sign KG, and if they did, that's probably not who they should be signing.

if he decides to take less to join a contender, then all props to him... it'll show that for him at least, it's not all about the money... but i have a feeling you won't see him taking a huge paycut like that.

haven't really been following this conversation, but IMO garnett would be a much better fit for the bobcats than vince carter. don't know if that's in the cards, but the bobcats have some $$$ and young guns to work with KG. a possibility at least...

That was the sound of the other boot dropping in Minnesota last week when at the end of a casual conversation about the Timberwolves again not making any key moves at the trading deadline, Kevin Garnett said: "We made no moves. Typical." Garnett added in an aside: "Thank God for opt-outs." He later insisted he said "opts," and Minnesota officials declared Garnett to be happy about everything.

I can see him doing just that. He's been frustrated for years and its clear that he really does want to win and its not just all about the money. I think it'll be easier to determine where KG will want to go once the playoffs come around. Players like him don't want to be on The List, you know, the one that Barkley and Ewing are on.

for how much less tho? you think he'll accept a 5 year extension, at say a little more than the total money he's due now in the last 2 years of his deal, to play w/a contender? i don't know... he might want to win, but to play basically for free for the last 3 years of that new contract in order to get a ring, i don't know if he values it THAT much... we'll see i guess.

personally i think the contract would have to be valued at the minimum of 5 years @ ~$15 mil per to motivate him to opt out of his deal... basically, a max contract... i think only a few teams are projected to have the cap space to sign him to a contract like that after next season, & most of them are not traditionally big spenders in free agency for any player... it'll be interesting to see what happens w/KG... maybe he wants to play w/Marbury so much that he'll accept the MLE to sign w/the Knicks? LOL!

Can a player who opts out, be re-signed(by the team he opts out of) and then traded? If so, I don't think it would be that difficult to get him the right contract and team of his choice. If it is possible, in order for Minny to get something out of it, a sign and trade would be their best choice.

i think the only way he could do that is if Minny would have the cap space to sign him to an extension... not 100% sure on that though.
