FAST FACTS: The only nonguards to get multiple "fastest" votes were the Cavs' LeBron James (fifth, 7.5%) and the Suns' Shawn Marion (5.3%).... I definitely don't think Yao Ming is the slowest player in the NBA.

I think it has to do with name recognition. I'm sure Yao would beat Jerome or Eddy in a race. Half the voters probably thought Jerome was retired though.
