I'm short on time so I won't post it, but it basically said the Knicks wanted to trade Spree for Abdur-Rahim and the Hawks weren't inerested.

sure the knick inquired about him. but thats all they did. Knicks couldnt put together a deal for him even if they included picks. Hes out of the Knicks league.

FROM INSIDER:

Feb. 13 - GM Scott Layden made another inquiry about Shareef Abdur-Rahim during the weekend, the Newark Star Ledger reported. With all of the talk about moving Spree, can the Knicks get a deal done? "I don't think they have anything to offer Atlanta but Spree, and the Hawks don't want that," one Eastern general manager familiar with Atlanta's business told the Star Ledger. "I don't think the Knicks will be able to trade Spree at this point. They'll keep trying, but if they want a young All-Star in return, I don't think they'll get it."

Last week the hot rumor had the Hawks talking to the Spurs about Abdur-Rahim for Steve Smith and Danny Ferry. However, Spurs coach Gregg Popovitch said the team doesn't want to make any deal that would compromise the salary-cap space they have cleared to sign free agents this summer. "We're not giving it up," Popovich told the San Antonio Express News on Thursday. "We're not." Popovitch said the team is unwilling to take on his contract as long as they believe they have a shot at landing free agent Jason Kidd this summer.

Of course other teams, without as much cap room this summer may still be interested. The Lakers, who have roughly $11.3 million in salaries, could also make a deal. So could the Sonics, who could send a package of Kenny Anderson and Vladimir Radmanovic. The Sonics almost dealt Gary Payton for Abdur-Rahim two seasons ago. Could they get him for much less now? The Bulls have been searching for veteran help and have plenty of young players -- Jamal Crawford, Marcus Fizer -- to trade. If the Cavs really want to start winning now, a combination of Tyrone Hill and Darius Miles from the Cavaliers could jump start the process.

And don't forget the Heat and Nuggets. Abdur-Rahim is better than almost any free agent those teams could land this summer. The Heat have Alonzo Mourning's salary they could use to acquire Abdur-Rahim. The Nuggets have Juwan Howard's. If these teams were willing to take on another unwieldly contract (like Henderson's or Mohammed's) and throw in a prospect or a draft pick, would the Hawks do the deal?

true, true.
completely untrue - KG leads his team, a bunch much worse than that in ATL, to the playoffs EVERY year. KG is an all-star every year. KG is the man, surrounded by scrubs.

Abdur Rahim - he can't carry a team, he's not even comparable to KG. Plus Abdur Rahim has help - in every situation. in Vancouver he had bibby. In ATL he has Jason Terry, Big Dogg Robinson, Theo Ratliff, Nazr Mohammed (who is very solid). He can't bring that team to the playoffs in the weak east?

Shareef is a young guy, with a lot of potential, but no toughness. He's not a leader. Allan Houston is more of a leader than Shareef. There has to be a skilled tough guy who can play under control who is accountable on the Knicks. Spree is that guy. Thomas is not, Allan is not. Ward could be, but has no skills left. Dyess could be that guy, but I doubt it. Plus, we need spree to hold things down at the wing spot, usually a potent position for scoring. Can 'Reef do those things? No.

Would he be a decent pickup in exchange for spree? Yeah.

If a deal went down, which it probably wouldn't, it'd be something like:

Sprewell (shorter contract than shareef) + Travis Knight (short contract) + Ward (short contract)+ denver's 2nd rounder

AbdurRahim + Henderson (bad contract) + Nazr Mohammed (bad contract)

ATL would do it to get rid of some bad contracts, and try to make the playoffs

We'd do it b/c we'd get a young potential All-star SF/PF tweener, we're not worried about playoffs and have a Starting lineup of:

PG: Milos/ Eisley
SG: Houston
SF: Shareef
PF: Dyess
C: KT

plus our first round pick

Knicks couldnt nab Rahiem. But I dont think a 3 headed monster could work when you dont have a dominant C.

Knicks trade Ward and Thomas and 03 #1 for Rahim

Atl gets cap space as they can buy out Ward, and a low budget, veteran PF/C to help stabilze thier front court. Plus the pick will probably be pretty damn good. Knicks go with a Rahim (PF) and Doleac frontcourt....a huge improvement over Thomas and HarringSpoon. Plus Rahim is young and can also play the 3.

Ward, Thomas, and a #1 sounds about right for Rahiem. Hes definitely worth it but can McDyess and Rahiem co-exist. If Layden pulled that trade id be estatic, but we know he wont do such a gutsy move. I really would like Layden to get his hands on Drew Gooden, even if we had to take alot of their trash. Drew could be a nice 3 on the Knicks. He reminds me of a young Juwan Howard.

So what does this deal do? You trade your rebounding and toughness and possible young big-man for scoring??? Abdur-Rahim has a tough time defending three's now... and his body is horrible by NBA standards and he will break down. . Sorry. This deal doesn't address our needs at the 4/5. Its doing a deal just to do a deal.

Now if your trading Spree for him, that's different. We get some rebounding at a position we don't. If we're going to deal Kurt... its going to have to be for someone thats a post presence and can rebound/block shots. Memphis would be an ideal trade partner.
