LAS VEGAS - From everything Garden chairman James Dolan has said about Isiah Thomas since early December, there doesn't seem to be much doubt that Thomas will return next season.

The one thing that remains unclear is whether Thomas will continue to serve as both team president and head coach. It is unlikely that Thomas would want to walk away from the front office duties, thus giving himself less power. If presented with an option, Thomas may want to bring in a coach and concentrate fully on running the team.

Thomas, who returns to work today with the Knicks, has refused to comment on his future.

Thomas has appeared somewhat run-down in recent weeks and has joked that having to hold three press briefings on game days is an exhausting exercise. Before this year, Thomas said repeatedly that holding dual titles in New York was not feasible. He even skipped this weekend's All-Star festivities in Las Vegas and returned home to New York following Wednesday's loss to Golden State.

Of course, if coaching is in his blood, Thomas may have more options than just the Knicks. Detroit Pistons head coach Flip Saunders continues to have his name linked to the University of Minnesota coaching job. Saunders played for the Gophers and his son, Ryan, is a medical redshirt this season with two years of eligibility left. One of Saunders' daughters is a freshman at Minnesota.

However, Saunders still has two years left on his Pistons' contract after this season, for a guaranteed $9.5 million. And even though Thomas is the most celebrated player in Pistons history, few people with knowledge of Detroit's thinking believe that the team would hire him as head coach.

Thomas had a falling-out with Pistons owner William Davidson after Thomas retired. But on several occasions, Thomas has gone out of his way to praise the Pistons' organization and its players.

Edit: My mistake for putting Newsday in the Title, shoulda been Daily News. Doesn't really matter though.

I don't think West has any interest in being the GM of any team.

Between being coach and being GM, Isiah should be the coach. He's already shown that (as a GM) he doesn't work well with coaches.

Here is the simple fact Isiah deserves to be fired!

Why?

Not because he has ****ed the cap for years to come, taken players with attitude issues that no one wanted, given cap room to conference rivals, didn't select our pg of the future, refuses to start the best player on the team, doesn't hold crawford or curry accountable for their defense, makes up a million excuses that the players that can buy into.

He is universally hated around the league.

The Sixers, The Pacers, The Nuggets, The Spurs, etc will not deal with the knicks unless we are getting fleeced, and i think it goes for every other gm in basketball, because he hasn't pulled off one good trade since he has been the gm, not one.

I am not counting him trading for Lee, it was a terrible deal he took on 24 million to obtain the last two picks in the draft, teams trade them away or pay a few million for their rights all the time. He could have got him without doing it.....

And I still don't love a player without a work ethic......I wouldn't have drafted Frye although he played well his rookie year i hated the pick and wanted to go in this order 1. Bynum 2. Granger 3. Greene

So I would rather have had our number two pick last year then Eddy Curry, anyone who doesn't see that while adding in our lottery pick this year is just being delusional......Isiah could have rebuilt the the entire team in the past two years.....He ****ed up with marcus williams......that was on a silver platter for him......Lee was a great find and i don't attribute it to a trade.......

our roster right now should be.....

Marbury/Marcus Williams
Crawford/Nate/Roye or Foye
Q/Balkman or Alexander Johnson
Lee
Bynum

Being patient in when Marbury expired or what moving Crawford for an expiring contract to free up space for our stud two guard this year we would be set and be a championship contender in two years, something we are not going to be as long as Curry is not trying on defense

I have a feeling Malik has been a good club house influence, along with QRich. And it's easy to say teams sell picks, but when has San Antonio ever sold a pick?

our roster right now should be.....

Marbury/Marcus Williams
Crawford/Nate/Roye or Foye
Q/Balkman or Alexander Johnson
Lee
Bynum

every team in the league can do this. it's pointless.

really, if you think about it, our roster "should be":

Chris Paul, Marcus Williams
Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson
Loul Deng, Ron Artest
Amare Stoudamire, David Lee
Marcus Camby, Jackie Butler

god, Thomas sucks! FIRE THOMAS!

Are roster would never look like that because if we had that talent to begin with we would not have been in the lottery. There is no science to being a GM to often they overthink what is the right thing to do, or value a player based on a select number of games.....

Of course fire Isiah, i hope your happy.

Jerome James showed nothing over his career but had a few good playoff games and you give him a five year deal
What did Jefferies ever do that warranted a 5 year deal has he ever been named to a defensive team, why is bown makin 3 million and jefferies 5?
Why don't we have a pg to mold? Because we think Francis, Nate, or Crawford is a future pg

You know you could bring in Charles Oakley to be a good club house influence or other veterans and pay them money to mentor the kids and not kill the cap.....

The suns gave away their pick this year to Boston for nothing? Team do it all the time.....

Its not pointless, we would have not gotten deng, or paul if we made the amare pick who knows where we would be......

But he didn't make the smarter pick in this draft and ****ed up with lottery protection, he ****s up in every move he makes

im not even sure which post he's better at, but he certainly cant do both.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

There really aren't many good coaching candidates out there. Let's face it. There aren't a lot of GM's or Coaches that you could say would be more successful for a sure.

But why are we even talking about the idea of Thomas going away. He's not going anywhere. I don't even think it would be a good idea for this team to have yet another year of change at the Coaching position. This team still has PLENTY of upside. Anyone who thinks this team won't get better is not paying attention. They're already getting better as it is.

Aside from the top teams, Dallas, Phx, Utah or Detroit, I think this team is capable of playing with any other team in the league. We've seen that so far. So if that's the case why are some of us so hard on him and the job he's done? Is it the current record? Don't go by that alone. Use your eyes and you'll see a team that's playing at a better rate than the record suggests. The poor start to the season clouds the truth about how the team is playing right now. After the Game against Denver they were 9-17, 8 games under .500. I believe they've gone 14-13 since the Brawl. Not spectacular, but have been better. If not for Nov.'s 6-11 record, things would look a lot different right now.

6-11 - Nov.
7-9 - Dec.
7-8 - Jan.
3-2 - Feb.

Mike Brown of the Cleveland Cavarliers..Bron Bron is pissed that the coach is stressing defense...They could be parting ways at the end of the season..

Why not to start counting month by month from last season or may be from 2001-2002 season...? May be we will look even better at times...
