Overlooked in all the festivities of the day was the League’s announcement of a few major rule changes. International players now only need to have their 18th birthday in the calendar year of the draft, making Darko Milicic and the Greek Baby Shaq draft eligible. Both will go top 5. The other major change extended the first round of the playoffs from best-of-five to best-of-seven, making it even harder for those early upsets …

Darko Milicic and Sofoklis Schortsianitis eligible for the 2003 Draft is great news. Even if our chances of landing Milicic, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony are slim to none. But getting lucky is not impossible. Orlando won the Lottery in 1993 after winning 40 games and Charlotte won the 3rd pick in 1999 after just missing the Playoffs.

But we're looking at Emeka Okafor and Kendrick Perkins as realistic picks. I just checked NBADraft.net and they now have us selecting 6'8" George Town PF Mike Sweetney. Can anyone tell me about his game? I'm not too interested in another tweener PF unless he's Charles Barkley.

Sweetney dominates the low post and is very much of a muscle guy down low. I don't think that's what the Knicks need because McDyess, Thomas, and Harrington can all score fromt he post. I'd much rather draft Okafor and have a defensive low post presence who will block/alter shots then a guy who will score. Also, with Darko being allowed now there is hope for the Knicks even if they don't get #1. The NBA lottos off the top 3, so the Knicks in any of those spots would really help now becuase there are three big time players available (LeBron, Darko, Carmelo)

I think this must be a concession to the first round best-of-7 series that they have added. I like both changes.

i think the extension of the first round series is a little suspicious. usually you want the first round games over quickly. the good series do no start until the second round anyway. why extend it? i think it is an ironic move since the lakers will most likely not enjoy home court advantage in the first round. hmmm. and they say stern is not a laker fan.

revenue baby, it's all about revenue. And good teams will beat their opponents in 4 or 5 games.

All about the dollars. And it just so happens that Shaq & Kobe generate a bunch of jersey sales...

I don't like the change from a 5 game to 7 game series. It decreases the chances of an upset...

I think that's what the NBA was going for, that way in the more marketable and prime time rounds you'll have the best teams and not Cinderella teams who are lucky to be there.
