But you don't "tank" games. Ever. If you do, you belong in jail. It's fraud. People pay for tickets, and they deserve the best product the team can put on the floor. I don't care who you get in the draft, it's not worth it to throw games. The fact that the Knicks have a shot at a playoff spot, however remote, means they have to play hard. When they are statistically out of the playoff hunt, then it really doesn't matter what they do.
The lottery won't solve the Knicks' problems. It would be great to get a superstar, but T-Mac hasn't exactly made Orlando a great team. He's given them excitement again, but that team is a long way off from championship calibur.
Say you get a young superstar on the rise, but he doesn't gel with his teammates, and that means in play not socially, and then you have the T-Wolves, a mediocre team with one of the best players in the game.
Yes, Knicks need more high-performance players, but not at the price of losing their current chemistry. Layden has to be careful not to move the wrong pieces out of town. I'd argue that we'd be happy to have a team like Indiana's, but they have no superstar - Reggie being at the end of his career.
It's not as simple as "getting Lebron".
