here's some more about this shooting contest...hysterical stuff:
Gil and DeShawn: Still Friends By Dan Steinberg February 5, 2007; 12:24 PM ET
As predicted, last Friday's DeShawn Stevenson-Gilbert Arenas three-point contest proved popular. More than 43,000 views made it the week's 14th most popular YouTube sports video, barely ahead of the Royal Rumble and well behind an Italian soccer riot. And it got considerably less than five percent of the traffic of a UFC commercial.
Still, I figured a brief update was in order for those who worried that DeShawn looked legitimately mad at Gilbert as he stormed off the court last week.
(Since I never had time for transcription before I posted my recap, here were DeShawn's thoughts about Gilbert at the time:
"He kind of cheated me, everybody on the team said it. He was in my face. I think he was kind of scared I was gonna win. But you know, that's Gil. Gil's going to try to find a way to try to win. It was a tough loss....But he knows what he did, and I'm not talking to him right now.")
Anyhow, I asked DeShawn this morning whether they were friends again, and he assured me that they were.
"That's my boy, man," DeShawn said. "I could never get mad at Gil, man, that's my boy. You know, me and him are very competitive, so we're gonna go back at it."
In the meantime, DeShawn went over to Gil's house for the Super Bowl party last night. If you didn't read Bog friend Dan Morse's Metro story about Super Bowl televisions, this was the party preview:
Washington Wizards point guard Gilbert Arenas said he invited the whole basketball team to watch the Super Bowl at his Great Falls home because the players wanted to be around his TVs. Arenas owns a 120-inch high-def projection screen, a second 100-plus-inch screen and six more TVs scattered about. All eight will be showing the game. The confirmed attendees included Donell Taylor, Antonio Daniels with family, and DeShawn. Donell reported that they played dominoes, talked smack and played card games, including Tonk, Spades and Bourre, which Donell was convinced DeShawn and Gil had made up but which turns out to be a real game. Hey, I've never heard of it either. Donell counted at least six TVs turned to the game, and said the spread was impressive.
"Aw man, he had the full layout," Donell said. "Macaroni and cheese, chicken wings, steak, green beans, mashed potatoes, ribs.... Aw man, I ate four times. Ate four times and took a doggie bag home."
"The food was awesome," DeShawn confirmed. "He brought everything: shrimp ****tail, buffalo wings, macaroni and cheese, greens, he had everything man."
Anyhow, I can't guarantee that the Wiz will win tonight, but I can guarantee that, $20,000 bet or no $20,000 bet, Gil and DeShawn are still friends.
From the lockerroom:
-I tried to interview DeShawn Stevenson and got a couple of things from him despite Gilbert's constant background chatter about how he took $20,000 from DeShawn in that shooting game the other day. Gilbert has now taken to calling DeShawn: "Second" as in he finished second. DeShawn simply calls Gilbert a cheater.
