O'Bryant Is Unlikely To Return This Season
25th January, 2007 - 9:23 am
Mercury News -

It appears that Warriors center Patrick O'Bryant's rookie NBA season has reached an early end.

Warriors Coach Don Nelson indicated Wednesday that O'Bryant, the ninth overall pick last summer, probably would not be recalled from his assignment with the Bakersfield Jam before the NBA Development League season concludes April 14. Golden State would have three regular-season games remaining at that point.

O'Bryant, the only NBA lottery selection to receive the D-League treatment, is averaging 6.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in seven games with the Jam but has fouled out twice and shot just 40 percent.

``I told him if he goes down to the D-League and isn't a dominant player, there should be red flags all over the place, and he should be the first to notice,'' Nelson said.

``He's not only not dominating, he's not playing very well. He's a long-term project. I really liked him the first week of training camp, but I assumed there would be great progress. He hasn't gotten better one bit.

``I'd like to go to dinner with him, but I wouldn't like to put him in the game I'm coaching.''

You can. Two players per season.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

That's how you send a message to a player.

Collins would definitely benefit from being sent to the D-leagues... couldn't agree more... but right now w/both Francis & Marbs out, we need him here cuz we have no depth at the G position.

In NY when we do this we call it head games played by a disciplinarian who wants to destroy the confidence of his players. We obviously could never do anything like this here.

I know I'll probably get killed for this but I wish Larry Brown sent Nate to the D-League the guy desperately needs a humbling experience. There's no question Nate's talent level is definetly NBA level but between his immaturity and plain stupidity he needs a bit of a reality check about what he needs to do to become a serious basketball player in the NBA. Which is learning the point guard position.

Larry brown didn't believe in the D-League like alot of coaches believe they can teach a player more then on the bench with the team...............but other then that, it's true. Kinda.

I though LB reportedly wanted to send Nate to the D after some of his antics last season.

We probably should have sent Collins to the D-league and let him work on his game, but some teams feel that a player can learn more with the team. It really just depends on how much time the coaching staff has to work with someone like Collins. Everyone else on the team either is not eligible or is needed here (Balkman, Nate, Frye, and Lee).

i don't see Nate doing anything in the D-Leagues other than becoming the go to scoring option & becoming an even more flashy, And1 style player than he is now... he could probably dominate at the D League level... what would that teach him?

It's about maturity and working on your flaws. In the D-league, Nate would probably be *the* playmaker. It would give him a chance to work on his distributing (at his size, he HAS to be a PG... and he just isn't one right now), his defense against taller players, and most importantly his maturity. He needs to improve in these areas before he becomes useful to the team. In the D-league, he might just score 20+ ppg, which also might help boost his trade value.

This guy O'Bryant was as raw as sushi going into this draft. He had a good tourney, but he wasn't ready to play in the league yet. He's gonna be good, but he's got quite a bit to learn.

in Mardy's case, i think a stint in the D-leagues would be very beneficial... i just don't think Nate would take that opportunity to learn how to mature... i think it would just reinforce his own notion that he's already a star when he clearly isn't, & that would be counterproductive.

If you could send 2 Knicks to the D-League, who would it be?

I'd choose Collins and Frye.

same here... but Balkman might benefit since he's getting sporadic minutes here, so i'd probably send him over Frye

Collins I would, Frye I would just give some gonad enhancing cream. Im sure people know who the other guy I would send.

Basically you send Nate down there with the message that you need to grow up, you need to become a point guard i.e. creating shots for teammates/running the team/playing with some brain or else you could be stuck going from place to place D-league than oversees wherever but not the NBA. Really how many NBA GM's if they were looking for a point guard would go after a 5'7 that plays as a shooting guard or would you rather have a guy who may not have the physical attributes but plays with some smarts and does a solid job running your team.

Remember Avery when he played he was no all-star didn't have particularly flashy moves but he did an incredible job serving as a floor general he really personified that term. If the Knicks were going to bring in a smaller player thats how he needs to play.
