21st January, 2007 - 11:30 am
Press Release -

New Jersey Nets forward Richard Jefferson will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle on Monday, January 22, 2007, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today.

Further details will be released following completion of the surgery.

all the chips are falling our way.
look for the nets to blow it up.
this makes it a 2 team race...between us and toronto.
and if pierce comes back, maybe boston makes a late surge.

The Nets are going to blow their team up because one guy is getting a surgery which has a recovery time of 4-6 weeks?

krstic is out for the year.
vince is opting out.
rj is out for 6 weeks.

they have a future to think about. kidd is playing like an allnba pg and they can get some nice pieces for him.

they can also get some nice pieces for vince.

and they have to think about putting together a good team for brooklyn.

thorn is a smart guy. he'll make smart moves.

dont count the nets out just yet. They still have Kidd and Carter and last time I checked those two were allstars. In order for the Knicks to win this division we have to stop thinking about just winning one game and start thinking about starting winning streaks. We need to bang out like 6 or 7 in a row ala Dallas/PHX.

I love how every time you talk about the Nets, you ALWAYS mention about how they are going to trade Kidd, trade Carter and go in a complete rebuilding mode. It hasnt happened yet and Im still waiting.

hey, it's what they SHOULD do. they're not winning anything. they still have attendance issues. and they're moving to ny. at some point they need to start divesting and this is the year to do it. why be held hostage by vince or risk losing him for nothing? and like silver said, kidd is getting old.

too many teams are trying to make band aid moves. they are in prime position to do it right.

I thought he was smart too, until he let Martin walk. Which now looks good because he is injured but he killed the chemistry, clearly they were a different team once he left. He was their heart and soul. Thinking about it some more, I dont think it was Thorn's decicion, more Ratner. So I guess he is still smart :)

I think they'll do all that in the offseason. You're forgetting this is still the weak, wide-open East where there's no one with +10 in the win column.

Ratner I think is going to sell the team once the Nets are situated in BK. That arena is just one piece of his big real estate overhaul he's doing over there.

(I'd love to see those condos once they get built, though.)

yeah, it was the owner's decision. just like reinsdorf didn't want to give curry a guaranteed big time deal. so then the gm's have to adjust and not lose the guy for nothing.

so thorn got 3 #1's in return and then turned that into vince.
and paxson got the best package he could, 2 #1 unprotected, 2 #2's and only giving up their 2007 #1.

sometimes gm's don't have full control of their team and don't have the flexibility or LUXURY of having a lavish owner.

you see, we have a HUGE advantage in that regard...but haven't really used it wisely.

Honsetly though, I don't see Vince staying to play for the nets much longer. What is in it for him, where is their commitment, Kidd is getting older and their are many other teams that are one star away from the promise land.

It would be smart to blow the team up now while you have all the chips in your favor and rebuild now, so they will have ample time to rebuild before the new building is up. They will need a very good team combined with a crappy knick team to compete vs the garden knickfans.

The move was good at the time and even better in hindsight.. KMart never was and never will be a max-player; luckily they were smart enough to realize that.

True, especially now, but back then he was a max player to them. He was a cornerstone of what they were building and they were a few role players away from a championship. RJ wasnt the star he is now. He was their heart, sould, their defense, even some of their offense. Kidd just had to throw the ball up. To the nets he was their guy, they made the finals back to back and made conference finals the year after and if Kidd was 100% healthy they probably win game 7 vs detroit and go again for 3 years. He broke a team up that was possibly as close as they will ever be to a nba title while in their prime. Sure now Martin is injured, but no one knew that back then.
