JAZZ: Larry Miller says Kirilenko 'putting himself on thin ice'
By Phil Miller

Article Last Updated: 01/19/2007 12:55:28 AM MST

Recent comments not going over too well with owner«1»TORONTO - Andrei Kirilenko is "putting himself on thin ice," Jazz owner Larry Miller said Thursday, by allowing his production to ebb while complaining about not being involved in the team's offense.

"The best advice, I suppose, for him is to play the game the way he knows how to play it," Miller said during an interview on radio station 1280 AM. " . . . To me, Andrei could make the choice to play well, and I don't think he's done it the past eight to 10 games."

Miller said he was surprised by comments Kirilenko made following a meeting Tuesday with the Jazz's coaching staff, all but admitting he was having difficulty staying interested in the team's games when he wasn't getting to shoot.

"Some of the games, I don't feel like I'm on the floor," Kirilenko said. "I just go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth and I go to sleep."

The team's owner, who cited conversations about energy and hustle he had with Kirilenko while negotiating the Russian's six-year, $86 million contract, said he wasn't happy watching his highest-paid player on the floor lately.

"When he shoots off the 10-foot elbow or 12-foot baseline, I'm cringing right now. He's shooting it that poorly," Miller said. But hearing Kirilenko explain that he wants "two or three plays" called for him makes it worse.

"I would have to say he's putting himself on thin ice," Miller told the radio station. "The combination of not playing very well and shooting his mouth off - that's not a good combination."

He also suggested an unorthodox solution.

"I'd almost like to call his bluff. Say 'OK, automatically we're going to leave you out there, you're going to take 20 shots a night five games in a row. And then we'll see,' " Miller challenged Kirilenko. "That would resolve the issue. He's either going to make them or he's not."

Miller made it clear that he suspects how that would work out.

"What percentage of the time is he going to make the basket when he drives down the key? What percentage is he even going to have the ball in his hands?" Miller said. "It sounds bad, but . . . I would say three-quarters of the time, he loses the ball before he gets to the rim."

But Miller also defended the six-year veteran, emphasizing that Kirilenko remains one of the team's most valuable players. For one thing, the occasional meetings that Sloan has with Kirilenko "always seem like a positive," Miller said, and he believes the situation will resolve itself soon.

His impact on the floor is even greater, making the current slump even more noticeable, the owner added.

"He can have so much impact on a game without having plays called for him. He can take control of a game," Miller said. "Andrei should make four field goals and four to six free throws a night just by being around the basket, being active underneath."

But Kirilenko sounded encouraged after his nine-point, seven-rebound, four-steal and four-assist outing against the Pistons. "I feel I'm much more in game now," Kirilenko said of his post-meeting allotment of nine field-goal tries. "I hope it goes on for few games now."

The guy is Russian, he's probably used to being on thin ice.

it hurts not having Mo Taylor- could almost see them doing a Mo & Frye (+?) for AK47.

I like AK better than any of our front-court players. With Eddie Curry, that would be great. He can score, rebound, and block tons of shots...leaving Eddie to score away.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

that miller guy is a fat idiot anyway, I never liked him. He loves airing his dirty laundry. He did it with malone and then both of them are sitting at a press confrence crying, professing their love for one another..... YUCK...

I don't see a problem running a few plays for Ak-47, he is not a great or even good offensive player, but he can go to the hoop, passes extremely well and is a smart player, I mean there are a lot worse things you can do than run a few plays for this guy...

I like ak 47 but he is so over rated. He is not a franchise player. He is a jack of all trades but master of none. He is arhuably the 4th best player on the Jazz. I would not give up Curry, Frye or Lee. I view them as our young nucleaus. I would trade anyone else for him though
I LOVED how Curry just exploded in the 4th, speaking as a fan of the Raptors, Curry looked well, scary I think is the word. Or Shaq-like Curry: 19.1ppg-7.3rpg-58%fg

you can't have them all, lee needs to play nearly the entire game with a couple of tweeks he is averaging 15pts 12rbs a night, eddy works with a trainer and actually commits himself he is 25pt 10rbs 2blks and playing 36 minutes, that leaves frye no where......

AK47 is a move you do if you can get rid of some long term deals, if you can't you don't bring in another francis contract

I agree with you on Frye. Last few games Frye has been getting about 23 mins per. I think he needs more time and game experience to develop but it seems like he's not going to get the minutes he needs here. As much as I like Frye, I think it might be time to look into moving him to fulfill another need, namely a SF who can shoot and defend.

Lee already plays 30 minutes. There are 96 minutes at Center and PF. That leaves 32 minutes for each of them and thats without all 3 of them every playing at the same time with Lee at sf. There are plenty of minutes there. AK can play sf.

that sounds like a low-class Larry Brown move. This isn't like a criticism in terms of what he needs to improve, this is a knock on his game. Its disrespectful.

I could see them both averaging around 36 but I think any more and you get diminishing returns. You have to remember starters dont play much in the 4th qtr of blowouts for either team. If they both play 36 thats 72 so that still leaves 24 minutes at pf/c. Plus at some points all 3 should play together. I sawy get ak47 for sf and move Jeffries

Successful Scenario
Due to New York and Utah being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. New York and Utah had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

as you can see we trade crawford because utah needs an nba starter for the 2 and crawford fits that bill.we trade jj2 so utah still gets an ak47 type.Channing frye they geyt youth and a good inside out player with boozer.

for the knicks, we get ak47 so we get a great shot blocker we really need, with craw gone q becomes our fulltime 2 guard with mardy and n8 backing the backcourt.we get gordan he only has 1 year left.he get arajo but we can waive him
