January 16, 2007 -- Mavericks billionaire owner Mark Cuban is one of the world's savviest entrepreneurs, but yesterday he praised Stephon Marbury for having the best business idea of 2006.

It is why Cuban has agreed to go on Marbury's new television show, "Stars on Stars" that will debut March 9.

Cuban said Marbury's $15 discount sneakers were pure genius.

"I love that he is doing a show," Cuban wrote in an e-mail to The Post yesterday. "Steph is setting new ground on so many fronts. Honestly, the No. 1 business story of the year should have been the Starbury line of shoes."

Cuban said he plans on wearing the $15 shoes on the show and about town.

"You would be hard-pressed to name anyone else in the business world, forget sports, who created a business that could create more cultural change than Steph," Cuban said. "The concept of $15 shoes that are cool and hip for kids to wear could have more of an impact on family finances and culture of consumption in many households than anything that has happened in years."

and then this

another sign of the apocalypse...

Over the past month, a switch flipped somewhere inside of him. He gets it now. Or he's finally playing with a cast that allows him to get it. People have always wanted to line up to help Stephon Marbury get it: Lenny Wilkens, Larry Brown, Isiah, Magic Johnson. Maybe Marbury simply needed to find the proper moment to get it himself.

"We're having a lot of fun," Marbury said. "It's fun to win at home. We have the best fans in the world. When we're playing well, they let us hear it. When we're playing bad, they let us hear it."

Few Knicks have ever heard both ends of that equation as Marbury has. The boos may not be gone forever. But the longer this stretch goes on, it's becoming clear that the player who inspired those boos just might be.

I don't know what's gotten into Marbs lately, but whatever it is, I just hope he keeps it up. A month ago, if you were to tell me that by mid-January Marbury would be at the very top of his game and playing inspired DEFENSE, I'd have asked for a bit of whatever it was you were smoking (not that I condone that sort of thing).

It's always been his decision. He's a great talent who gets too caught up in distractions. When he ignores the distractions he is a great player. When he's caught up in how his teammataes, coaches are doing. Or how great he is, that's when he gets distracted. Stephon Marbury has been his own worst enemy for years. IT's just that this year the excuses ran out and he has to put it on himself. That's a great motivator sometimes.
I just hope that people will like me
