The Knicks best stretches this season have come when playing big.
One of the biggest deficits on the team is perimeter defense, which is magnified when we go small (aka Jamal, Marbury and QRich).
Jefferies, a defensive player, was the starting shooting guard for the Washington Wizards last year, a playoffs team, and he's also demonstrated that ability here, as when he shut down Rip Hamilton against Detroit in 3OT - he also helped on Tayshun Prince in regulation (Prince was 4-16 with 13pts, vs 11-17 for 31pts in Detroit's win earlier this season.)
AND, Isiah has consistently said that David Lee comes off the bench to be part of a higher energy unit. Right now the point guard for that unit is Nate Robinson who is a point guard in height only and a shooting guard in all other ways.
So, logically, Jared Jefferies should start at guard for our horrendous perimeter defense squad. Jamal Crawford should be removed from the starting lineup and run the point from the bench. I don't want to cut too many of Jamal's minutes, but I want to see this team go bigger more often. Our best stretch of the season came when David Lee was the starting small forward. However, if QRich is going to be healthy, he pretty has to be our starting small forward. I'm not sure he's fast enough to be our starting SG, but ideally I'd like to start Lee at SF and QRich at SG.
However, as long as DLee gets 30 minutes a night, I think the starting lineup should be:
PG - Marbury SG - Jefferies SF - QRich PF - Frye C - Curry
There's plenty of shooting in that lineup between Q, Frye and Marbury. Jamal and DLee and Balkman should be our primary options off the bench. I do not think we can be a .500 basketball team with Jamal, Marbury and QRich being on the floor together for the majority of the game. Last night they all played about 40 minutes. I think our defense is going to look bad any time that happens.
