The DJ and I have a proposal for the fiscally inept...not just us, but other teams as well. There are sixteen teams over the salary cap (all over $63M) with the biggest spenders being NY at $119M, Dallas $94M, Philly $92.4M, LAL $77.4M, Portland $73.1M, Indy $69.6M.

What would you think if each year a team like ours could:

1. Buy out a contract per year without cap penalty (salary comes off books asap)

2. Waive a player without penalty to cap (the salary comes off the cap immediately) AND the team cannot use the MLE (subtraction and no additions)

3. Apply the MLE to decrease salary under the cap- in other words, no acquisitions of players, but a flat $5M or so discount off the cap.

There's nothing unfair or wrong about the current rules. With competent ownership a competent GM, the team wouldn't be in this trouble.

While I agree, there are sixteen teams over the cap. We have bought out players, the Nets bought out Motumbo a while back, Webber was just bought out.

You are being penalized for your mistakes, exp. if #2 (no MLE allowed or no new talent acuqisitions) was implemented.

I would just like to see a hard cap. Fans who are unlucky enough to root for teams that are run by stupid owners/GMs aren't necessarily penalized for as long, or at least they have a chance to get a fresh bite of the apple every few years.

I think thats what most hoped for with the Allan Houston rule...Every sports talk show radio host wondered if that would be part of it...I would love to see it happen...It would give the teams in big markets an unfair advantage because of the revenue stream...

If you aren't in competition for a title run , you have no business being over the cap.

As bonn said we need more competent ownership, scouts and gm's on NBA teams.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

I agree. The fact that we're discussing this means that many of these teams aren't competent enough to manage their cap correctly, so a hard cap would fix the problem. The hard cap would have to be higher than the current cap, but overall, I think it's the solution. Part of implementing a hard cap, though, would go along with Queenie's mention of being able to buy out contract(s) without cap penalty. That's an essential piece. Otherwise, teams would still be penalized for past mistakes.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
