Penny Hardaway Could Play For Sonics Tonight
5th January, 2007 - 5:17 am
Seattle Post-Intelligencer -
The Sonics had been waiting for today to clear some roster space and potentially add some pieces that could spark a postseason run.

The club requested waivers on guard Desmon Farmer and center Andreas Glyniadakis on Thursday, trimming the roster to 13 players and giving the Sonics a chance to sign perhaps two players to 10-day contracts.

One of those 10-day contracts could be offered to former All-Star Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, who worked out for Sonics coach Bob Hill on Dec. 18 and impressed club officials with his conditioning and mobility. He is nearly five years removed from microfracture surgery on his right knee and has been impressive in workouts in Houston.

The Sonics did not have to make decisions on Farmer and Glyniadakis until Wednesday, which gives a strong indication they could sign Hardaway today and he could potentially be in uniform for tonight's game with the New York Knicks .

The team's brass met before Thursday's practice at the Furtado Center and Hill said they would meet again during the afternoon for "Phase 2" of their plan.

Hill has been clamoring for a starting center while Hardaway could provide some scoring punch in limited minutes off the bench. [READ]

Good for Penny. I honestly was not happy with how Isiah handled Penny (and Rose for that matter). While it's a big expiring contract, a guy like Penny actually fills a void in the team. For the minimal minutes he got on the court last year, he had an impact. I don't know why he wasn't given more of a chance. Anyway, I could see him being a nice player off the bench for the Sonics.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I think Penny got a lot of chance his first year and he played pretty well in the playoffs that year. As he got older and slower, he got less playing time. I like Penny and hope he is able to play well.

Honestly, I think Penny or Rose would've been more useful to this team than a guy like Nate. A big guard who can pass, set up an offense and defend. Most of our guards do none of those things well.

That's cool, we can have one of the players hand him his paycheck for this week instead of having someone in the Knicks payroll office mail it to him.
I just hope that people will like me

This comes from Marc Stein (Daily Dime):

You read a lot of forecasting about Larry Brown's consultant work with the 76ers ultimately landing him back on the Philly bench. Similar conclusions can be drawn more readily in Seattle, where Lenny Wilkens is a newly minted Sonics vice chairman who already works in close proximity with the team as a color analyst on the team's TV broadcasts.

The consistent word in NBA coaching circles, however, is that Wilkens really doesn't want to coach again at 69. By all accounts, he's reveling in his role as the lead sounding board for Clay Bennett and the rest of the Sonics' new ownership.

Wilkens, you see, isn't merely using his lifelong Seattle ties to spearhead the club's efforts to find the funding that would lead to a new arena in the Emerald City. He is essentially operating as team president, according to NBA front-office sources, with a strong say on any basketball move that the Sonics make here.

That's one reason, sources say, Seattle hasn't signed Penny Hardaway to a contract after coach Bob Hill worked him out recently in Memphis. Wilkens had Hardaway in New York and isn't a fan.
"It was good," Curry said. "I killed Malik, Jerome. The usual suspects. It felt good."
