Definitely looks like 2008 we're going to have a whole lot of this ugly payroll coming off the books. So then what do we do? Trade the expirings and gamble for an answer or let them expire and woo some big name free agents to the awesome that is our city? :)

I thought Rose's deal ended after the 07-08 season. This list has it ending the same year as Marbury's deal.

actually, it's the summer of 2009 is the EARLIEST we could TRY to get under the cap.

but right now, with some #1 guaranteed deals coming up, plus possible extensions to lee, frye, and nate, we will probably be over the cap that summer as well. being $1 over the cap is almost the same as being $50 mil over in terms of signing free agents. BUT having smaller contracts do make trade making a little easier.

Getting under the cap is a pipe dream at MSG. We need to probably trade those expirings for who ever we want to sign that year.

IF we're never going to get under the cap, then we shouldn't have waived jalen or mo. that's OUR BEST chance of trying to land the better players in the league.

paring down payroll means nothing unless your goal is to get under the cap one day.

i agree, we just need to be smarter about who we go after with that strategy.

Well not getting under the cap doesn't mean you have to be 130 million dollars over the cap. Their goal could be not to pay 130million in luxury tax, it's still a business.

There's a team option for the 4th year, right? How much of a bump up is that?

sure, from dolan's perspective but for the team, it doesn't do jack in terms of our ability to land a franchise player.

We have 52 million coming off the cap next Summer, guaranteed, and we're still WAAAAAAAAAY over the cap. We'll be where we were when Isiah first took over.

Is everyone forgetting that we'll need to resign Frye, Lee and Robinson by then. Assuming we get bargains on each or say we only sign 2 of the 3, thats still a substantial amount added to our payroll.

Getting under the cap is not in our future...

Damn, I could have sworn Malik Rose was done after next season. That means we are stuck with him for this year and next before we can trade him. At least, we are goign to lose about $50 mill in salary this year, which should give IT some leeway to make trades. Hopefully, IT or whoever is the GM, can make some wise decisions. There is no hope for us getting under the cap. By the time Marbury and Francis come off the books, we will have to resign Lee, Frye, and Nate and will also have to prepare to resign Balkman the following year.

Actually the summer of 09 is going to be very interesting because Lebron James and Dwayne Wade both have player options that yr. The total cap hold Frye, Lee, and Nate will have at that time assuming the TO are picked up will be approximately $4-4.5mil. That means if no salary were to be added from now till then(highly unlikely) the Knicks may be as much as $10-15mil under the cap. That means the 08/09 season will be very interesting because Marbury will want an extension before his contract expires. It doesn't and would not be extended from 20+mil, both parties know this but he'll probably want something around $7-10mil/yr. Thomas has decide who he's going to get rid of bewteen these group of guys.......

Q
Nate
Crawford
Jeffries
Marbury

At the minimum 2 of them have to go, if this team wants to get involved on the sweepstakes in the summer of 09. This is of course assuming Wade and Lebron aren't extended from their current contracts.

I think it could be if it was decided upon. theres no rule that says we have to keep them. we can trade any of the 3, before it becomes time to extend them.

Sean makes the same point that I make. If we were going to trade one of them for a younger player whose contract won't expire until after 2009, we'd have to do so pretty soon (like before next season starts). Otherwise, what are we going for? The fact is, say what you will, but Frye, Lee and Nate are well respected around the league, and will have a perceived value. The trio might net over $20 million a year when they expire. We won't have enough space, counting the contracts we'll still have, plus resigning the trio, plus any small contracts we have... to make a serious run at a stud (LeBron, Wade, etc...). So, the fact of the matter is that we're not getting under the cap enough to sign a star. I don't see any way it would be possible.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

it's actually the summer of 2010. they signed 3 year extensions that kick in starting next season, with an option for 2010/2011.
