BOO GOTTA BELIEVE
ISIAH: KNICKS 'ON RIGHT TRACK'

December 9, 2006 -- Ultimately, Isiah Thomas is right. Knicks fans "don't see it, the way [he] sees it."

Where Thomas sees a light at the end of the tunnel, Knicks fans see a train full of more losses barreling down on them.

Yesterday, with a 7-14 record, Thomas spoke positively about the Knicks' fate. In his opinion, the Knicks are "on the right track."

"We're not in a bad spot considering we have had two of our main guys out," Thomas said, referring to Jared Jeffries and Channing Frye. "As much as people want to be negative sometimes with our team, my job is to be real with our team."

In the abysmal Atlantic Division, the Knicks are a game-and-a-half behind the first-place Nets. But, in reality, of all the sub-.500 teams in the division, who thinks the Knicks are the most likely to improve?

Yesterday after practice, Thomas was sensitive not to create a further rift with the fans. He cut short a questioner he felt was trying to position the boos at the Garden as Thomas vs. the fans.

"I don't know if it is me against them," Thomas said.

After 10 regular-season games at the Garden, Thomas and the Knicks do know what they are facing tonight. Though the Bucks are the opponent, the crowd is quickly becoming the Knicks' nemesis.

With a 2-8 home record, they know they are just a couple of missed open jumpers away from boos and an early deficit from the "Fire Isiah!" chants.

Yesterday, the Knicks faced their increasingly dire situation.

"Winning is the best cure," Stephon Marbury said. "It is like good deodorant. Everybody wants to be around you and smell you when you have good deodorant. When you don't have no deodorant on, it is not that fun being around that person."

Steve Francis, out with tendinitis, said boos never have bothered him.

"I've been shot at before," Francis said.

The man on the firing line - figuratively - is Thomas. Thursday, he said the fans can't be expected to understand the game the way he does, which is an interesting tact for someone who wants the negative environment to improve.

"I'm confident we are on the right track," Thomas said. "I'm very stubborn about the path we are taking. I'm very realistic about who we are and what we are. Building a young team, that is very challenging in this league."

Thomas seems to know how quickly the season can unravel, no matter what the standings state.

"We just have to stay together," Thomas said. "New York is a hard place to win in. The league right now is a very difficult league because of the parity of the league."

But if Thomas' positive outlook is to become prophetic, it is going to start at home.

"If you are going to be a serious playoff contender, and that is our goal right now, and we are right in the thick of things, you definitely have to win and play better at home," Thomas said.

Though it would seem to make sense the booing would affect the Knicks more on offense than on defense, they are averaging more points at home (98.9) than on the road (98.3). Defensively is where they falter at the Garden. The Knicks have allowed 102.9 points per game at home, 99.7 on the road.

"Our job is to turn the boos into cheers," Thomas said.

Did Isiah just say it is especially hard to win at home because of parity or am I misinterpreting something?

RV, even though, I would respond to to with my normal post, you're right. He didn't use it as an excuse for at home. He used it as an excuse for the overall record.

In the context I read it, (an article about winning at home) I misinterpreted it.

Dammit, I gotta stop doing this before coffee time.

Another classic Marbury quote.

I think Marbury's right. The Knicks don't have no deodorant on, and they be stinkin up the Garden.

I don't care who is the expert of what--what excuse is made--if we have a bad run here anytime soon--it will put us on a level where we would have to play 600 ball just to win 38-39 games[to make playoffs]. They have to stop making excuses and start winning. In desperation--we are 1-2 at home against teams with brutal records. Milwaukee on the B-B-- I mean if we cant win the game--where is the hope for the season?

No, we don't think he'd go back to Philly, RVhoss. Philly fans hate him.

Frye has only been out a few games and they sucked even worse with him on the court.

Larry Brown didn't have The Great Jared Jeffries all last year so why can't you win without him?

Pathetic. The only good I can see of this is that Isiah is really feeling the pressure that's he's desperately reaching or anything. It's a good thing that people aren't as stupid as he thinks they are. Just rvhoss/babyKnicks.

You do get the gist that he frowns upon the Knick fans.

Despite the record, I still feel like Isiah will end up getting more out of these players than LB ever did. The development of Curry alone has been very satisfying. Now we have to tighten things up and get some wins. LB's team's never performed on the road like this one. The animosity at home is partially a result of the atmosphere LB's time here created last year. All that losing and fighting had the fans in a very inpatient mood and the players playing tight. LB was able to get the fans to see Steph as the enemy and that didn't help things at the start of this year. We had players slumping and a tough schedule to start. If you look at the games we lost against top teams like SA and Houston, that's 4 understandable losses right there. I don't think we're as bad off as it might seem. Last year we got blown out a lot and this year far less so. The amount of improvement we need to make is not as pronounced as it was last year. We were a -6.4 pt differential last year and this year were at -2.6. Playing better defensively should get this team where it needs to be.

The return of Jared and eventually Frye will be welcome additions. Our main problem has been on D so adding another player to the SL who can defend should help eventually. His and Frye's addition will make the SL better and make the bench stronger. We'll likely end up with Steph, Q, Jared, Frye and Curry, which will make us bigger, longer, stronger defensively and a better matchup against most teams. I think this team is going to get it together and have a good stretch at some point soon.

I think that is a solid lineup. Q back at his natural position is a good thing. This make the Knicks a much better defensive team. Having an almost 7' front court willmake it difficult for teams to penatrate and get a shot off. The Knicks aren't to far off from being a solid team.
