Bad blood in booth. NY Post. 12-08-06.

By Andrew Marchand

If Gus Johnson and Walt Frazier were as feisty on the air as they apparently are off it, MSG Network might really have something.

Last Friday in Detroit, sources said, the two had a heated shouting match during a TV timeout of the Knicks-Pistons game. The beef, according to a source, was Johnson complaining that Frazier was talking too much.

Reached by phone, Johnson - who is the Knicks' lead radio voice and fills in for Mike Breen on TV - declined to go into detail, but claimed there is no friction between he and Frazier.

"The food in Detroit is bad and it kind of upset our stomachs,'' Johnson said, trying to defuse the situation.

After the two came back from break, a source said that Johnson kept his headset off for a few seconds. On the air, there were no noticeable problems.

Johnson continued to refer to Frazier as the "living legend.''

Frazier, who was off this week, was unavailable for comment.

An MSG Network spokesman said, "It was no big deal and all is well with the world.''

To borrow Johnson's over-the-top final call from the Knicks' opening night win, "Hallelujah!''

That's odd. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that Clyde could care less about that kind of thing and if someone told him that he was talking too much, he would cut back(even if he felt he wasn't talking too much) because he likes things to be relaxed. Maybe its just my perception

Walt talks too much? How about Smith?

Did you see before the last game when Smith, Johnson, and CLyde were standing there and Clyde took shot (joking) at the other 2 about passing? Johnson grimaced, it looked like he took it a little personally.

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Didn't see that oohah, I'm surprised you picked up on it, I wish I did as well and I wish I had tape to go back and look. I like Gus Johnson a lot, I'm surprised he'd do something like this.

I didn't think much of it when I saw it, I just chalked it up to awkwardness that happens during live tv sometimes.

What happened was that Trautwig(I think) sent it over to Smith, Clyde, and Johnson, introducing them as 3 great guards and Clyde chimed in with: "2 who didn't pass!"

Did this Gus Johnson play in the NBA? I know of the old late Gus Johnson, reputed to be the first backboard breaker/foul line dunker, but where did our Gus play?

Our Gus Johnson is a little too milk and cookies for my taste.

Thats crazy. No our Gus Johnson never played sports professionally, so maybe Clyde was sending a cryptic dig at Gus? I don't know. Very weird though.

Maybe Clyde was making an inside joke about them not passing the MIC.

By I remember when Gus first took started working with Clyde (after Marv was fired and Johnny Hoops got demoted to radio), at first Gus was very laid back and timid. He was awful his first few games and that soured me on him till this day, but after a while he started to rag on Clyde's occasional misuse of language. Clyde took it in stride but it was getting annoying. Marv is over the top in his use of dry, cutting humor, and even he never messed with Clyde. Gus was not up to the task, nor should he be putting himself in position to try.

Anyway, it sounds like Clyde was just messing around, as some men do, and fussy Gussy didn't like it. Clyde is paid to talk, and while once in a while he'll go too long with meaningless drivel (often about his clothes...), what color commentator does not?

IMHO, no one should tell Clyde to shut up. In fact, keep him talking. Clothes and all.

Is Gus from the West Side of Chicago?

He appears to have this same Agenda of proving his crdibility behind the Mic to stand up for a regime I'm sure in his mind feel it's being villanized.

When Gus Johnson took on Al Trautwig on MSG NY I saw a whole different side to him.

He challenged al and belittledhim about being so pessimistic about the knicks.

Great segment I thought. He made al back up a little bit.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Clyde is best thing about the Knicks. Gus Johnson can go call a high school game if he can't work with Clyde.
