Lee Will Go Back To Reserve Role
6th December, 2006 - 5:37 am
New York Post -
David Lee has been one of the Knicks' most productive players, but when Channing Frye and Jared Jeffries return from injuries, he will return to his role as a reserve.

"David will go back to the bench," Thomas said. "That's for certain. Because I know my team. I know how I want him to play. The things we ask him to do in that second unit, he's very good at it."

Also joining Lee on the bench will be either Stephon Marbury of Steve Francis.

"When it's time to make the decision on who starts, who plays, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Thomas said.

That sound you hear is the second to last nail in Isiah's coffin being hammered in.

The last one will be when Marbury or, more likely, Francis will be headed to the bench.

God I can't wait for the Knicks to get healthy.

What a fun year this is going to be. If anyone thinks Jeffires will be a savior needs to have their head checked. IT is going to go down with Steph and Francis.

THIS STUPID MOTHERFUCKER DOESN"T GET FRYE IS NOT GOING TO BE EFFECTIVE WITH THAT UNIT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO GET HIM THE BALL IN HIS SPOT, MAKE HIM THE FOCAL POINT OF THE SECOND UNIT

i'm having a hard time trying to figure out why those things (rebounding, running the floor, getting tip ins, playing defense, being a facilitator of the offense out of the high post) can't benefit the first unit as well.

So just because Channing was a lottery pick and Lee wasn't, Channing keeps his spot in the starting lineup just so Isiah doesn't look like he drafted a bust? What a joke, Isiah's ego has and will kill this franchise. It's obvious that Lees presence in the starting lineup has helped Eddy immeasurably and it's not like Lee hasn't put up stats himself, he's done a fine job starting.

i'm glad isiah is sticking with his "best man plays" philosophy.

jeffries will help but the net result will probably be minimal. like others have said, if he really was that good, the wiz would've ante'd up an extra $1 or 2 mil a year for him, luxury or no luxury.

Maybe Frye is being inserted in the starting line up to boost his confidence...maybe showcase him to other team...show them that the Knicks still haven't given up on him.

I also think that he see D.Lee has a defensive presence...just like Jeffries. So he wants one to come out with the second unit. Plus, Having Jeffries start at the SF spot will move QRich to the SG position which will cause major match up problems for the other team.

The only thing I don't like is that it seemed that Marbury and Lee were really playing great together...

Marv seriously, does it seem like it, if he is going to take out maybe our most important player to curry's development its seems he is confused what is been going on the past couple of weeks. To isiah's credit it must be the meat and hot sauce that has made eddy into an offensive force

Frye is really bad next to Eddy in fact he is useless because he hangs out on the perimeter doesn't go to the glass and then just forces shots because he is not getting the ball in position to make his jump shot......

How does JJ deserve to start? He averages 6 points and 5 rebs a game? Frye started 15 games and played lik crap. Lee hasnt been perfect but he makes the team better. Isiah will figure things out when he is coaching the Antartica fighting penguins to a North Pole Championship.

Exactly. It's all a joke.

At least we won't have to deal with Assiah next year.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

All I hope is Jeffries replaces Marbury/Francis first and Frye replaces Lee later. Lee should start and I think he can prove that with JJ2.

well, JJ may deserve to start because he started and played an important role for a playoff team last year. i get the feeling he may be a glue guy who makes the team work better even if his own stats don't reflect it.

i think frye's performance, confidence and value will go up by playing as the featured offensive guy with the second unit, still playing plenty of minutes. it may even be better for the guards that way, too. instead of pounding the ball inside to eddy and channing with the SL, and then having to create all the offense for the second unit, pushing the ball or taking shots themselves, they can run the same offense the whole game. our Gs complain about learning their role- let's make it simpler.

my 2 cents

Isiah has showin in putting together this team that he has absolutely no concept of positions, chemestry, roles etc.... This move shows more than anything he really only knows how to evaluate young talent.. not build a team.

Anyone with half a brain can see Lee needs to start over Frye. Ther are just not enough balls for this team

Well, in IT's defense, the second unit has lost alot of its pop since Lee has been starting. I think IT's ultimate strategy is to find a starting unit that can control games and then bring in a second unit that dominates the other teams second unit. His hope is that Jeffries will bring the passing and defense that Lee brings, you then move Q to SG for defense, passing, and 3-pt shooting, you start Fyre, who I think is better than he showed in the first 10 games. With these moves, you can then have a second unit with Crawford, Francis (probably), Lee, and Balkman. Lee and Balkman play well together (they both can run on the break) and really cause havok. Lee has played well as a starter, but it is not like he has been dominating opposing starting PF's. He has had some of the same defensive problems that Frye had. Plus, if you start Frye you keep his trade value up, which might help us in January when the team is going to make a move. I am not saying I agree with the move, but I don't think it is devoid of all logic as most seem to believe. We will just have to wait and see. Curry's recent improvement has more to do with the guards getting him the ball in better positions rather than the fact that he is playing with Lee.
Trust the Process

Thomas, too, got testy when he explained his decision to ultimately bench Lee, who's averaging 10.6 points and 8.9 rebounds.

With Lee to the bench, he will again become a leading candidate for Sixth Man of the Year - something tangible he can show owner James Dolan. Problem is, the Knicks' rebounding could suffer. Thomas disputes that.

"Jeffries can rebound, Frye can rebound, Curry is rebounding, our guards are rebounding, Renaldo Balkman rebounds," Thomas said.

"We have a pretty good rebounding team. I don't think that's going to change. We'll continue to be a good rebounding team. I'm not interested in one guy leading the league in rebounds. I'm interested in team rebounding."

Frye is actually a poor rebounder for his size and Jeffries is too thin to be a true banger. But why let the facts get in the way?
