Anyone else have this? It stinks--it's making my computer run slow and I have a cable connection. What is the deal? Should I go buy a new Apple or something?

no, go to www.getfirefox.com and use the FireFox browser. Takes a little getting used to but it's 1000% better than IE.

Mine runs fine, except both Firefox 2.0 and IE 7 both crash more than the previous versions.

My only real problem with IE 7 is that you can't prevent tracking cookies unlike FF 2.

I'm not that computer savvy and like Martin, I want top notch speed at all times. If I had to deal with this versus spending a few bucks it's a no-brainer. I'll try that download martin suggested and give it some time as a first step.

I installed IE 7 and I can't say it is any slower.

FF is best- I need IE for some stupid regressive sites

Clearly the solution is to install Linux and use Firefox on Linux. ;) Without all the extra MS crap looming in the background, you notice your OS goes 2-3x times faster on Linux.

Not saying Linux is for everyone (it's not), but I have Fedora Core 5 on a P4 2.4 Ghz, and for the most part, equivalent tasks run faster on that system than on my Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz with Windows XP.

Say what? The only thing it might 'suck' in, is that with certain types of media applications, you may have a smaller selection of (stable) software. Past that... why does it suck?

Firefox on Linux definitely runs better than Firefox on Windows. The development environment is very good. The PDF reader doesn't take 10 seconds to load (Thanks a lot, Adobe). There's not 1000 background tasks that you're not using continually polling the Internet for updates. In addition, on Linux, your virus scanner has little to no work to do, because 99.9% of viruses are targeted towards Windows.

Hey, I use both Windows and Linux, but calling it how it is, for similar tasks, they're generally faster on Linux. The tradeoff is that Linux isn't appropriate for a novice, and will take the experienced a longer time to set up... but, the flipside is, once you have an idea what you're doing on Linux, you have a lot more control. And it doesn't suck out of the box. Every time I install a Windows system, I then spend about 8 hours updating, patching, installing all sorts of protective software, removing a lot of MS's crap that's practically useless/harmful (DCOM, Messenger, UPNP, raw sockets).

Me neither. Internet Explorer hasn't been a good option, since I was in college. Only then, it was because Netscape 6 sucked, and Netscape 4.7 became outdated. Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, and Lynx (yes, occasionally there's a use for a text-based browser) all became more useful. :P

How about this. Linux sucks for the average home user. Mom and Dad. For super geek techie, it may be fine.

Fair. That's why I winked right after I suggested it.

In fairness, though, Linux is *getting* more user friendly. It has a ways to go, but... plug and play works a lot better under Fedora now. For example, you can plug in a digital camera under KDE or Gnome, and up pops the associated application. Very windows-like. It's getting there.

Personally, from what I'm told (I don't use it), for the technically clueless (80% of the population), the best solution would be a Mac. Also, now that they hacked Mac OSX, you can run Mac OS on a PC that has particular hardware that is supported by Mac OS X. Might make it worthwhile to try eventually.

Dude, run any of the Fedora Core that are current right now. My preference is the FC5 which I run on my 2.0 Ghz, 2.8 Ghz desktops and a 2.2 Ghz laptop. There is absolutely nothing you cannot do on it. Its still a bit rough around the edges but man, Linux has come a long way and its gaining momentum, fast. Also, the new "yum" (add/remove software type utility) makes it retarded simple to use. Windows is really fugly and costs $$$ for every little thing. Also, they leaves tons of holes open in the name of compatibility and you never know when they are calling home cause none of the source is released.

Solace: KDE or Gnome? I personally run XFCE4 on my FC5 boxes. Its the most lightweight and the most customizable. I think the 2.19 kernel was released yesterday. I dont wanna compile for source without knowing someone thats done it. I'll IM you about this or you IM me when you are online.
