whats your story?

How did you fall in love with the Knicks?

Why havent you givin up on them?

All of us here are obvious DIE HARD fans.......... But why? The knicks seem to have one of the largest if not THE largest fan base in all of Professional Basketball. So im just wondering what exactly is the draw? Well at least what is YOUR draw?

Me? - My father is a teacher at SUNY Purhcase college and the Knicks used to practice there. I always enjoyed playing basketball in school cuz it was the only sport i was relatively good at. But I remember when the Knicks got Riley it was a big deal around SUNY and my Dad was talking about seeing Pat Riley at some campus event so i guess i got intrigued thru him. There was a Knicks autograph day for the college and i went. From then on it was pure Knicks love.. I became a certified gym rat. I used to go after school every day to hang out at the Purchase gym (this was the early-mid 90s) Just to catch a glimpse or get an autograph.

Some of my encounters inclooded:
playing horse with Patrick Ewings son. A pickup game with Derreck Harpers nephew. Rebounding for Charlie Ward while he did drills. Getting a free gatoraide from Greg Anthony. Having Charles Smith bet me $5 on a freethrow i was taking.. which i made and he then ran off without paying up lol. Watching Hubart Davis never miss a single shot. Seeing Anthony Mason practice his one handed Free Throw before he unvailed it the games. Watching Doug Christe practice for the Dunk Contest when he was in it that year and missed like all his attempts. I must have gotten Anthony Masons autograph 10 times and he never said anything like "havent i already given u an autograph?" he was my fav player and the guy was mad cool no matter what situation i cauight him in.. he'd sign whatever i asked him to sign. Ewing.. I had a car door slammed in my 11 year old face by Ewing. The guy diddnt like to sign autographs. I saw him soooo many times.. I must have asked for an autograph 10 times... and only once did he actually sign something for me but i ended up loosing it. Anyways i have more stories.. i even have some of Don Nelsons game notes that he left at the gym one year...

but back to the point of the post - This is why im a knicks fan.. ( a big one).. so why are you?

Riles. For me, he brought some legitimacy to the organization.

I started watching games in 92 when the city was getting caught up in Knicks Mania (cany call me a front runner i was only 10 at the time). Me and my three brothers were all animal fans, going crazy watching the games (my mother wasnt allowed into the room because she was bad luck). I just got caught up and never looked back. Thing that sucks now is that there are so few fans out there. My girl banned me from talking about the knicks around her because "noone wants to hear about the Knicks"

Even my brothers hate the knicks (frontrunners), and anytime they come up its just a hate-fest.

But this is my team tho, I cant wait for the good years to come, and I have a feeling that theyre only a few years away. I love the knicks, tho it seems they hate me. Whenever they lose a game it fux with my emotions, ruining my day, my morning paper read, sex with my girl (lol), you name it.

i originally started actually following this team when Rick Pittino coached them to 52 wins in 88/89 season... i was a casual fan before that for several years, but baseball & football were my passions.

Martin - you can appreciate this...

during Ed Bradley's moving memorial service at Riverside Church, Charlayne Hunter-Gault gave a marvelous eulogy. She spoke of Ed's loves... high fashion, Cuban cigars, New Orleans jazz and ...

...his beloved New York Knicks.

Starting in 1971 or so as a wee lad all of about 9 yrs old going to the Garden. The golden years.

Got to see Earl light up Clyde a few times. I was so jacked when we got him! I had a pretty good spin move in the 6 grade once I learned to not carry the ball!

Willis, Clyde, Earl, Bill, Dave, etc.......Dick Barnett! Fall back baby!!

Epic battles with the Celtics, Bulletts and others.

I was very involved with the 1973 championship game. Jerry Lucas' bombs to spread the defense, Dean the Dream to go uptempo, and Henry Bibby sniper shooting!

I remember my whole family crowed around the tv watching sunday afternoon games. I think there was a 3 or 4 overtime classic game in either 73 or 74 against the dreaded Celtics. I don't have many memories of all 6 of us in front of the television except for a few Knick games. Knicks won that game.

By 1975 Willis and Dave retired and clyde's knees started up bad.

My favorite uncle died in 1973 and he had season tickets. He got me into basketball by taking me to the garden. Died at age 43. Was very good man and was good to me at a time when I needed someone like him. Both his children died young also. Very sad. At least he left us knowing his knicks were the best basketball team on earth!

I Also became a NEt fan when they played in the ABA. Dr. J came in 1974 and we won that year and again in 1976. I got to see game 7 which was the last ever ABA game. NEts came back from like 20 pts to beat the Larry Brown coached Nuggets with David Thompson and Dan Issel!

Golden age of hoop back then for New York. The Nets sold Dr. J, and moved to freaking Piscataway, and the Knicks began Starphuching big time. We bought into it at first, but after a while you figure that stuff out.

1990's team with Riles bought back some good times.

I think the bond is there when your a kid. The Riley/ewing era I can understand the young guys getting into the team if they were kids then, but I was in my early 30's and saw the flaws as much as the magic. I still about cried in 94' and again after the famous Van Gundy/Morning fight.

The Layden era sucked but at least the team played hard. They were boring, but I hoped the Starphuching was over and we would just suffer until a rebuild with youth was inplace. Sort of pay for the sins thing.

Which is why the Isiah era makes me so sick to my stomach!

yeah, I know. I am more despondent that CBS canned his expose on the whole "Africa nuclear materials sale to Iraq" lie just before the 2004 elections. I think a large bit of Ed died that day too.

Nalod - you are indeed Jedi

but this phrase kinda threw me, "The Layden era sucked but at least the team played hard. They were boring,..."

What about the Ernie Grunfeld era?

Just as things were getting interesting with Camby and Spree, Van Gundy stabs him in the back and Checketts wacks him over dinner.

Dark days indeed after the Miami miracle with Allan Houston

Earnie made it interesting. But I kind of sided with Van Gundy. My reason was Earnie by bringing in Latrell and Camby lowered the team character while making it more athletic. The 99 run was s fluke and we got taken apart by the Spurs. IT was fun. In the long run, van Gunday was right because Camby got soft under pressure, and Spree was always at odds with management over somthing and it spilled over. Its funny that Van Gundy survived cuz it seemed that Ernie kinda did a mini Isiah type quick rebuild while Van Gundy stuck to his Riley methoed of grinding it out. Also lets be real, the Spree-Allan experiement (ala' FRANBURY) was never a real success. Spree was two small to play SF, and like Franbury, SpreeAL was hard to trade and get good value because of the contracts.

Again, my take on Layden was after the Dice disastear I thought we were just gonna wait it out for contracts to become tradeable and use our picks more. I wanted to see it thru.

Pretty much the first basketball games I was able to watch on TV were the 1994 Finals against the Rockets. Im living in Germany and am 28 years now, it kind of was the right time to get interested. Those finals just got me. The intensity was unbelievable and I even stayed awake till 3 or 4 o'clock, when the live games where broadcasted, due to the timeshift. Even thought game 6 I became a BIG John Starks fan!!! Since then its pure Knicks love whatever happens. This is kind of unusual, cause Im a Bayern Munich (soccer) fan since forever, and they are the complete opposite of the knicks - they have won 7 of the last 10 championships and are one of the most solidly run clubs in the soccer world, so I am normaly not used to failure!!! ;-)

Well back to topic, I have been representing the Knicks wherever I go since 1994 and I will probably till I pass out. No way to quit I guess!!! I travel to the states like every two years or so and never ever have I not stopped by in NY for a short time and visited the Garden!!!

This forum, for me as a non american citizen, is a wonderful possibility for me to keep in contact with guys feeling like I do about this team!!! Andrew and Martin got to really thank you for that!!! I really really appreciate the effort and great job you guys have done for years and still do!!!!!

When I was 10 or 11, my older cousin from Croatia moved to the States. He was like 19 or 20 and he was an ill baller (crazy shot from anywhere on the court, great handle, solid D). He got me into playing basketball and as a result I got into watching.

He was a big fan of Drazen Petrovic, who played on the Nets at the time, but the Nets played on Sportschannel and that cost money -- so I ended up watching the Knicks on MSG. Since my folks were immigrants, I didn't inherit any team allegiances -- I was really this close to becoming a Nets fan. Thank god my folks didn't think spending the extra bucks on Sportschannel was a good idea...

Anyway, I ended up really digging the Knicks style and guys like Starks and X-Man were my early faves. Not too long after I started watching, the Knicks were pushing the Bulls to 7 and making noise. I loved how none of our boys took $hit from the Bulls. My cousin only liked teams that had Croats or Yugos playing for them -- so we ended up developing a little bit of a rivalry in that respect. I mean, I like to see the Cro's do well, but I could never cheer for Kucoc when he played against us... Game 3 of the Eastern Semis was a tough one to swallow -- my cousin was rubbing it in hard.

I went to my first game with my friend and his dad. It was Knicks vs. Drexler's Blazers. Starks had a rough start but he battled back and took us to a win. That was a cool experience...

whoa... 99 was not a fluke. The Spurs capitolized on a Knick team minus Ewing, and with a broken LJ. If we had Ewing for the 25 miunutes a night he was playing at a high level for thats a different series. Also we went to the ECF the following year before falling in a long series to the Pacers. What should have happened was after 2000 the Knicks should have realized they didnt have a championship core with LJ/Ewing being done and they should have traded Houston or Sprewell for some young talent. Deal with some potential losing seasons and rebuild around Camby and young guys. Camby may have been made of glass but thats an OK thing when your rebuilding. 2-3 years later we could have been back in it, especially when you look at the drafts post 2000

I became a knicks fan in 1984 on Christmas day, I can't remember who they were playing but it was at the garden and they came back from a big deficit, the garden was rocking, then they got 33 in the next draft.

Being that I was born and and raised in NY helped obviuosly. But Bernard King did it for me. He came and went through the Garden it seems like a Tornado. It was over so fast. I was young (10-11) when he was the King of NY, and I really didn't get a chance to appreciate his game like I would now of course.

Then Pitino's Knicks took me to another level. I absolutely loved that team and there style of play.

As I grew and started to watch and understand the games I evolved more to my home team of the Knicks.
