From http://markmadsen.com/blog/PermaLink,guid,223850b2-2bae-4774-b121-ed812ffcefc5.aspx
I wanted to talk about Sam for a second though because not only is he one of the best players this game has ever seen, but he rubs off on his teammates. From a basketball standpoint, Sam has the ability to raise his teammates' scoring averages by big jumps. He just makes everyone around him better. When Sam was here in Minnesota, Fred Hoiberg had a great year, Sprewell was at the top of his game and Kevin Garnett was the MVP of the entire NBA. It was almost like our entire team all had career years. Now he is doing the same thing with the Clippers. Sam has such a huge personality, I think the fans loved watching Sam interact with the refs almost as much as watching the game. When we lost Sam we lost not only a great floor leader but we lost a good friend.

Marbury should take notes. This is personally why I hate PGs who have scoring stats only.

The rehabilitation of Sam Cassel's rep is amazing. All the way up to the Bucks he was considered selfish.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

He won in Houston, NJ, Mil, Minny, and LA he has always been known as a winner, but the claim by Madsen is a little crazy

That was from and amongst guys like Big Dog and Tim Thomas, right? Not 2 guys who I would put too much faith in their observations.

Cassell is an awesome player. He understands the game and understands when he needs to take over.

Also amongst Ray Allen. Also with the Nets.

Don't get me wrong, I have been a Cassell fan all the way back to Florida State, but he was considered a me-first player until a magic turnaround in perception when he got to Minnesota. Very similar to Rasheed Wallace in that respect.

Who knew?

the Nets?!?! KVH was never the same after Sam left. Sam used to pump him up like crazy. Sam was there for KVH's rookie season and I remember reading a lot of about how Sam used to urge KVH to shoot more and be more aggresive.

Cassell has a monster ego, always has, but me-first? Not sure I think thats fair. I think Sam's first priority has always been winning. Now maybe his problem has been he's vocalized that the best way to win is for him to do whatever he wants.

Cassell = winner
Cassell = clutch

I agree that Cassell is good. All I am pointing out is his characterization up until Minnesota. It was: Oft-traded, talented but selfish PG Sam Cassell. That has changed 180 degrees.

P.S. I believe he was traded from the Nets because the plan was for Cassell to shoot less and KVH more. I am not defending it, I am recalling it.

Cassell couldn't carry Marbury's jock strap. Yall knew what you were getting in Marbury when he arrived

your memory is dead on. I remember Calipari in many interviews laughing about how many Sam never took a bad shot. What they didnt factor in was what Madsen's talking about above... Sam's personality. When you play with a winner like that it can boost everyone's confidence. KVH was never the same after Cassell got traded and Jayson Williams got hurt. When KVH came into the league was a considered a pretty good consilation prize to Duncan. I remember reading about Majerous (sp? Utah coach) bitching out Isiah when he suggested KVH come out (Zeke had the Rap's pick and was rumored to covet KVH).

So indirectly, we can blmae Marbury for hurting Van Horn's career becuase it was his enormous noggin that ended William's career!

How is this for a memory? Rookie Sam Cassell posting up Knicks guards and abusing them in the finals. Cassell is clutch.

I heard an interview with cassell by Jim ROME the other day.

Cassell when he came into the league he had guys like Drexler, Mario Elie, Hakeem, Kenny Smith to show him how to be a "PRO".

Marb's never had that, all he hhad was his brothers back on coney Island telling him how to keep it real even though you made it in the Association.

Cassell was very candid about his younger yrs in the league partying all night long with a game the next day and all.

He mentioned coach Rudy T told him, if you're gonna party like a rockstar you better play like one the next day.

He said he wants to coach after his playing days comes to an end in a couple of yrs. Very good interview.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Cassell was awesome in NJ. He and Van Horn had tremendous chemistry and he was a Calipari guy. I believe he got hurt and then traded in a game against Atlanta in '99. Calipari lost his job shortly after that and Van Horn was never the same. He was fun to watch on sports channel but I hated him as a rookie with the Rockets.
