Skiles, Wallace Butt Heads In Win
26th November, 2006 - 3:35 am
Chicago Tribune -

Blatantly defying coach Scott Skiles' team rule prohibiting headbands, Ben Wallace broke one out to match the Bulls' road uniforms Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

Thirteen games into a four-year contract that will pay him $60 million, Wallace and Skiles are at odds, according to the Chicago Tribune.

One night after Wallace played a season-low 19 minutes, 38 seconds, Skiles removed Wallace just 2:02 after tipoff for breaking the team rule.

Is Skiles' worried Wallace' insubordination will become an issue? "No," he said after the game. "I don't know why. I'm just not."

Skiles wouldn't comment on why his rule is in effect. Wallace wouldn't comment on if he agreed with it.

"Man, I don't care about that," Wallace said. "All I know is we got the win."

Asked if he understood why he was benched, Wallace looked downward. "Ask [Skiles]," he said. "Coach makes the decisions. I just play."

After Wallace was removed, assistant Ron Adams went to talk to him. Fellow assistant Pete Myers, Wallace's closest confidant, subsequently followed suit. Finally, assistant Jim Boylan, Skiles' right-hand man, visited him. And, still, the headband remained.

When Wallace finally removed it, during a deadball situation with 2:41 left in the first quarter, Skiles called for him to re-enter. But the turmoil didn't end there.

Wallace slipped the headband back on just before the second half was set to start. Skiles immediately sent Malik Allen to the scorer's table before play began.

When Wallace again removed the headband during a timeout with 5:46 left in the third, he re-entered just 81 seconds later.

At this point, Boylan had taken over as coach after official Tim Donaghy ejected Skiles with two quick technical fouls 56 seconds into the third.

no sense having a rule if your not going to enforce it.

its basketball.. why in gods name shouldnt you be allowed to wear a headband. It would be like George banning players from wearing eye black. I understand some of the league and team image stuff, but thats just assanine

I understand that the coach has to enforce his rules, but this is a silly rule, and he and Ben are behaving like children.

jerry sloan has the same rule, he says it's for team unity.

many teams also have rules of debatable worth on hair length and facial hair.

heck, even teams like the army, navy, air force and marines have rules.

Oh man. You think that with all this going on they'll trade Wallace or release Skiles so we can pick one of them up?!?

In all seriousness, I would love to have Skiles as a coach here or Ben Wallace here. I think Wallace-while an a-hole from some of the stories I heard about him, but him being an a-hole stems from him being a VERY intense individual-would do wonders on this team for the likes of Marbury and Curry.

Make 'em or break 'em baby!

hair cuts dont affect play. Maybe he like the headband because of the sweat factor?

maybe, and i don't know if it's a good rule or not, but i like that skiles isn't afraid to enforce his rules. and the irony is that one of wallace's conditions for signing with the bulls was a continuance of a tough brand of coaching.

i have a 4 year old son. kids love to test their parents limits. if the parent doesn't set any the child rules the roost. trust me, i'm nt the nbest disciplinarian or limit setter, so i know. wallace is testing skiles, and he will respect and appreciate the limits in time.

good to see skiles is more concerned about headbands than winning.

Id say that B Wallace is a jerk for disrespecting his coach on such a trivial matter as a headband.

Skiles has made a trivial matter important. That's why he's a moron. Let him wear a freakin' headband.

its not like a headband is just an ornament, people do wear it to keep sweat out of their eyes. IMO there's some other conflict between skiles and big ben and skiles was being immature by taking him out for this

Skiles is the coach and rules are rules. Ben Wallace should feel free to ask the bulls to revoke his contract if it really bothers him. When you guys go to work are there clothing items that you cant wear? Yes. So just as we listen to our bosses, Wallace should listen to his boss. It wouldnt be big deal if he didnt wear the headband.
