St. John's To Welcome Top 5 Recruiting Class For 2006-07 Men's Basketball Season
QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head men's basketball coach Norm Roberts announced the signing of four additional recruits from the Class of 2006 to National Letters of Intent on
Wednesday. Standout talents Derwin Kitchen, Avery Patterson, Larry Wright and Rob Thomas join early-signee Qa'rraan Calhoun to comprise a five-man Red Storm class that has been cited fifth in the nation according to recruiting services.
"We're very excited about our recruiting class," said Roberts "We feel that we have addressed a lot of our program's needs, improving our overall athleticism and our ability to score the basketball. The players we recruited bring a lot of versatility to our program both offensively and defensively."
Qa'rraan Calhoun • F A dynamic forward, Calhoun signed with the Red Storm during the early signing period in November. After averaging 19.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game as a senior at Raritan High School in Hazlet, N.J., he spent a year of prep school at Bridgton Academy in 2005-06. He led the Wolverines to a 22-9 record and the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) championship with a 79-62 victory over Winchendon. He averaged 19.0 ppg, 11.0 ppg, 4.0 blocks and 3.0 assists for the season at Bridgton.
Derwin Kitchen • G An explosive combination guard, Kitchen was a runner-up for Mr. Basketball in the state of Florida after averaging 20.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals as a senior in 2004-05 at Raines High School in Jacksonville. He was a three time all-state honoree, a two time City of Jacksonville Player of the Year and a four-time all-city and all-conference selection. Kitchen led Raines to the Florida state title in 2003 and 2004, and was named the state tournament MVP as a junior in 2003.
Avery Patterson • G An accurate outside shooter and adept scorer at the two-guard spot, Patterson was named a second team National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American on Wednesday after shattering scoring records in his second season at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Patterson averaged 20.3 points and 3.9 rebounds while making 37.4 percent of his shots from long range during his second year with the Reivers. His 771 points on the season for Iowa Western set a single-season school record as he led his squad to a 30-8 record and an appearance in the 2006 NJCAA Tournament national semifinals. The first team NJCAA All-Tournament team member was also selected to take part in the NJCAA All-Star game as part of the U.S. team on April 22 in Texas.
Rob Thomas • F A heralded player at small forward, Thomas boasts a complete inside-outside game and is a proven tough defensive matchup. He averaged 20.0 points per game and 11.0 rebounds for South Kent (Conn.) before being slowed by an ankle injury as a senior. In his first year at South Kent, he averaged nearly 25.0 ppg while leading South Kent to a 32-9 record and a spot in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class A Finals. Thomas was selected to the Jordan All-American Classic regional squad at Madison Square Garden and is rated a Top 25 small forward by several recruiting publications.
Larry Wright • G An athletic and versatile guard, Wright was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan as a senior, leading the top-rated Saginaw High School squad with 21.0 points per game, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals. He was an all-conference and all-state selection as a senior and was named to the all-area "Dream Team" in his junior and senior years. He has been invited to play in two upcoming all-star games, one on April 29 as one of the Top 20 players in the state, and one on August 5 when the State of Michigan All-Stars take on the State of Ohio All-Stars.
St. John's adds the five newcomers to a group of 11 letterwinners from a team that posted a 12-15 record in 2005-06. The Red Storm's win total exceeded the number from each of the last two seasons, and St. John's five conference victories on the year surpassed the number of league wins from each of the past two seasons. Two of the Red Storm's wins came against ranked opponents: a 55-50 win over then-undefeated and No. 9/9 Pitt (Jan. 21), and a 68-56 victory over No. 17/15 Louisville (Jan. 17).
After the pair of signature wins over those ranked opponents during the week of Jan. 15, the accolades came pouring in for the St. John's men's basketball team. The AP sportswriters gave St. John's votes in the Top 25 for the first time since the 2001-02 season on Jan. 23. ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale named the Red Storm his "Team of the Week" on his website, and ESPN.com's Andy Katz bestowed the same honor. Head coach Norm Roberts was named the national coach of the week on FOXSports.com.
