If your read Stan Van Gundy's comments about his brother in todays Newsday. He apparently left because he didnt like the situation and not because he was burned out from too much time spent on coaching and not enough with his family. QUITTER!!

"QUITTER!!"

Yeah, I bet you'd love to coach this group of aging, overpaid talent and wake up every morning and read about what a bad job you're doing in every newspaper. Your an idiot if you think Jeff Van Gundy is a quitter.

I think that with JVG the Knicks would have at least made the 8th spot in the playoffs last year and this year....under Chaney we are fighting to stay out of last place in the east. It seems obvious to me that the Knicks are not playing as hard under Chaney as they were for Jeff.

Agreed Andrew. However, I think we are starting to turn the corner a little bit and have begun to play some good ball.

First of all, this team was not an 8th seed last year - they were still scrubby. Second of all, all of our wins with the exception of one come from BAD TEAMS so we are not playing good ball.

JVG aint as good as people claim and Chaney aint as bad. But
everybody knows that Jeff Van BeGonedy left because he didn't want
too many Ls on his record. Some coaches don't mind; they'll take on
a rebuilding project or a team that's got problems and they don't
worry about the Ls. That's Chaney, and that's Hubie Brown taking on
the Grizz. And yeah, Chaney gets to earn some decent money. Other
coaches, they want the Ws. That's Phill Jackson and JVG.

But I don't like to see people put Chaney down too much because he's
a real gentleman and he's got a tough situation with this particular
group of guys. You say JVG would have them 8th seed in the playoffs?

Naw. If he thought he could do that, he'd still be around.

When a team fires a coach, its supposed to be what was best for the team. It's part of the business of the game. But when it's the other way around and the coach leaves the team he's a quitter??? JVG had to do what was best for himself, only he could make that choice. No way in hell is JVG a quitter. As for being the business of the game... WHY the hell did Chaney get an extension??? Who do you guys want to see as head coach???
ya cant stop me, you can only hope to contain me

I'm pulling for Chaney; I really want him to succeed. Maybe JVG is a better coach, but he's gone. JVG could win a game by sheer force of will. He hated to lose and he knew how to get the most out of his players. But even he was having a hard time at the end.

For all you Chaney-haters, I would ask you to look at it the other way round: Suppose Chaney had Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson? Wouldn't the Knicks have a much better record? A series of bad trades has gotten us here. Don's just left holding the bag. Losing Dice was a major, major blow. We don't have Camby, we don't have Dice. We've got Doleac. (I hope he's better than he's looked the last few games. We could have stuck with Travesty Knight.)

I agree that Chaney deserves a little slack given the overpaid jokers he has to work with. I disagree with the JVG comments. The only thing he did wrong was not leave before training camp started. He should not have started the season. He knew he didn't want to work for incompetent-but-nice-guy Layden and throw-money-at-the-problem-Dolan and have to constantly scream at the bums he's got just to keep them at .500. He should have said "this sucks" and left sooner.

He left for all the right reasons. His timing was bad. If the players won't do what he tells them, and management refuses to fire them for a more subordinate group of players, then he won't be able to coach effectively. Every coach in every sport runs his course, and JVG knew he had run his with the Knicks. They just wouldn't conform to his system, and management would not get him better players.

When you're in that same situation at work, you look for a new job. He didn't quit. The players quit on him, and management would not back him up. How could anyone work in that kind of environment?
So, JVG is a quitter
