Tigers deal three pitchers to Yankees for Sheffield
ESPN.com news services

The Detroit Tigers have acquired Gary Sheffield from the New York Yankees for three righthanded pitching prospects, the Tigers announced Friday.

In return for Sheffield, the Tigers sent Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett to New York. Detroit agreed to a two-year contract extension with Sheffield through the 2009 season.

The moves comes a aday after Sheffield angrily blasted Yankees management and said Bobby Abreu, the player who took his place in New York's lineup, isn't a good a player as he is.

i like it... Sanchez is highly touted & the other 2 have potential... the Yankees really needed to get in some younger pitching, & they did that w/this trade... Sheff got the extension he was moaning & groaning about... both sides make out.

i wonder how long it'll be before Sheff starts making a stink that he should be starting over Magglio in RF?

taken from another forum:
Wheelan throws a mid-90s fastball, a sinking 2-seamer and a nasty splitter. Sanchez throws a mid-90s fastball, a low 80's plus curve and an OK changeup. Both should join our top-10 prospects. I know nothing of Claggett, except that he went 7-2 with a 0.9 ERA in 60 innings as a reliever for low-a last year. (Scouting reports courtesy of BAs 2006 handbook)

not to mention we have Tabata in the minors as the future CFer... along w/Melky, our OF situation looks good going forward as well... Duncan is struggling in AAA but he still has a good upside at 1 of the corner IF positions... now all we need is a young C prospect to take over for Jorge & a SS prospect, & along w/Cano our IF will be set too.

more scouting reports courtesy of another site:

Sanchez, 23, posted a 10-6 record and ranked second among all Tigers' minor-league pitchers with a 2.63 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 20 games (20 starts) with Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie in 2006 (123.0IP, 97H, 40R, 36ER, 47BB, 129K). He began the season with Erie, where he went 5-3 with a 1.76 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .190 batting average in 11 starts before being promoted to Triple-A Toledo in June. In his first five starts with Toledo, Sanchez went 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA and was named the International League "Pitcher of the Week" from June 12-18. He finished the season with a 5-3 record and a 3.86 ERA in nine starts with the Mud Hens.

Sanchez, who attended high school in the Bronx, was named the Tigers' minor-league "Pitcher of the Month" in back-to-back months (May and June) after allowing just three earned runs over seven consecutive starts from May 17- June 18 (47.2IP, 49K). Sanchez entered the 2006 season ranked as the Tigers' sixth-best prospect, according to Baseball America. He was selected by the Tigers in the 31st round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft.

Whelan, 22, ranked third among all Tigers' minor-league pitchers with 27 saves in 2006, going 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 51 games for the Class-A Lakeland Tigers. He limited opposing hitters to a .178 batting average (33-for-185) and held right-handed hitters to a .158 average (18-for-114). In addition to being named a top prospect in the NY-Penn League following the 2005 season, Whelan also ranked as the 10th-best prospect in the entire Tigers' organization according to Baseball America. He was originally selected by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of Texas A&M University.

Claggett, 22, posted a 7-2 record with a team-best 0.91 ERA and 14 saves in 51 games for Class-A West Michigan in 2006 (59.1IP, 35H, 7R, 6ER, 20BB, 58K). He held opposing hitters to a .174 batting average (35-for-201) and did not allow a run in his final 10 appearances of the season. He was selected by the Tigers in the 11th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of UC Riverside.

It's a good deal. Only Sanchez will enter the Yanks Top Ten. And the Yanks aren't signing Barry Bonds.

Great move. To get some young pitching talent for Sheff... that's exactly what we needed to do. Now there's room for Melky in the lineup, which means Matsui will be DHing. We've improved by that alone.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

i doubt highly that the Yanks will be happy to let Giambi play 1B fulltime next year... i think they'll get a Shea Hillenbrand/Kevin Millar type righty hitting free agent to split time at 1B & allow Melky to split time w/Matsui in LF next season (Matsui DHing in games Giambi is at 1B)
