Dolan will predictably not allow the next GM to just trade away Eddy Curry. It would go against the grain of his "ego", sort of like defying a command he previously allowed.
Might as well let Curry grow into his game anyway. No ones gonna give an expiring contract for him. For now, for all intensive purposes, just keep him.
The year to shoot for is the summer of 09. That's the 1st year we'll have cap. We'll need to get rid of a contract on the small side before then, esp. depending on who we're targetting in FA. Hypothetically speaking, if we dumped Nate, Frye, Lee, or Balkman sometime before the draft to a team under the cap for a pick, that would put us at around ~45-47 Million for 09 FA. Which means we can sign someone to a starting salary anywhere from 8-10+ Million.
Note: If we don't dump one of those players, all we could afford is the MLE.
The year after, in the summer of 2010, accounting for draft picks and the big FA, we'd have our salary # at ~ 35 million, meaning we'd have MASSIVE money to throw at Bron and Wade. Even if we couldnt get one of those, we could still get any number of FA's, and still have leftovers for the NEXT year.
That's how we can rebuild. Dolan won't want the next GM to tank purposely. Never has, never will. He'll want success one way or the other. Dolan's idea of success of course is to have a marquee name and fans in the seats. Shouldnt be too hard.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure.
And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.
