Rose: $15M to walk away

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

It's nice work if you can get it - actually, if you can't get it. Jalen Rose will get $15 million from Knicks to simply go away after short stint with team.
Jalen Rose officially was released yesterday after the Knicks negotiated a contract settlement with the veteran forward.

Rose is scheduled to earn $16.7 million this season and likely will receive $15 million from the Knicks, who also bought out Maurice Taylor's contract last month. Incredibly, the Knicks also are paying off the last year of the contracts for Allan Houston ($20 million), Shandon Anderson ($8 million) and Jerome Williams ($6 million).

In the case of Rose, the Knicks would have been better off had they simply held onto Antonio Davis' expiring contract rather than trade him to Toronto for Rose. The Rockets traded Taylor to the Knicks for Vin Baker and Moochie Norris, two players whose contracts expired on July 1.

"We understood when I got hired how we were going to build a team," Isiah Thomas said. "We were going to use expiring contracts and we knew one day we would find ourselves in this position where you've got a lot of young guys.

"We've had five first-round draft picks over the last two years and we got two acquisitions in terms of (Eddy) Curry and (Jamal) Crawford, and then we made another trade for (Quentin) Richardson. The cupboard isn't as bare as when I got here, but at the same time, now you've got to give these guys a chance to play.

"I can remember some of you wrote when I got here that it would take five years to do. Go back and check some of your articles. I haven't been here that long, but I think I like what we have and I'm not ashamed of what we have."

Rose appeared in only 26 games for the Knicks last season and arrived in camp out of shape.

15 mil is a lot. I guess by releasing him this late he had virtually no chance of getting the MLE from anyone, so they had to up to $15 mil. Not sure why they didn't make these decisions with Taylor and Rose earlier in the summer.

yeah, it's been a ton of wasted money, and (against public opinion on this board) still believe the only reason we used the expiring deals last year on a) Jalen was to get the pick and get rid of LBs crooney davis (he also did run into the stands) and b) Francis at the behest of LB to get rid of Zeke's crooney the dillusional reezy.

I believe that Isiah is a good enough coach to get something out of/for Stevie Knicks, but the Jalen move has basically blown up in our faces.

Every move post LB has been a winner in my book as the book is still out on Cato v. Jackie B.

But this $15 mill buyout on the surfiace at this point in time seems to be a huge waste of everyone's time and Dolan's money.

WE still have francis' $20 mill deal (rounding up) and Rose's expiring contract for a KG or a Jermaine Oneal, and I'm of the belief that a) we don't need either of them and b) weren't going to use BOTH gigantic deals this year as we still have Rose's contract for next year expiring and a ton less distractions for the media to harp on.

IN all, it's a wash, I think Rose will sign with the Heat and ride the pine to a title. (or maybe philly with webster).

But at this point, nobody is going to make a trade with Isiah that returns fair or better value to the knicks and isiah.

He's made his bed, the other GMs are making him lie in it.

Let's go knicks.

Well if you factor in Rose's $15 million buyout and Balkman's salary, as we traded two expiring contracts to get those, we're paying something like $17MM this year for Balkman. A little high, no? Then again, he is the next Artest/Rodman/Mattingly/Montana.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
