Riley Showing Interest In Jalen Rose?
31st October, 2006 - 4:32 am
Miami Herald - Unlike most cases when the Heat coach downplays free-agent prospects, Miami coach Pat Riley sounded intrigued Monday with the possibility of adding 6-foot-8 veteran Jalen Rose, who was waived by the Knicks Monday.

"He's a very skilled player," Riley said shortly after Rose agreed to a buyout with the Knicks. "He's still young, I think, at 33 years old. So he is capable. He's very capable, we know that. But he has to be at the right place at the right time."

Riley offered his comment about Rose shortly after he said a potential return of forward Shandon Anderson has been placed on the backburner.

Because Rose received a significant portion of the $17 million he was due this season from the Knicks, he would arrive with relatively little impact on the Heat's salary cap. http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/43015/20061031/riley_showing_interest_in_jalen_rose/

I'm sorry, but has a team's GM ever done more to help OTHER teams win a title than help his own?

Hahaha. So true. What's ironic is we dropped Rose AFTER Jared Jeffries got injured, and now we're basically forced into Quentin Richardson, Renaldo Balkman and possibly Craw or Lee sliding over to the 3, until JJ2 returns. Think Rose would've helped at all?

I am not a Rose fan, but I thought waiving a $17M player that we can use outright may have been a poor choice.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

for me, the playing time worries are nothing, we SHOULD be giving minutes to Balkman, Q, Lee at the 3 until JJSkinny is back. Where Jalen comes into play is if KG is still in play.

let's not proclaim Riley some kinda genius for being interested in picking up Jalen Rose... come on guys, does it really matter at this point? Jalen wasn't going to get any playing time over Q, Humpty, Lee or Dynomite... would've been nice to use him as a trade asset to get a player who could really help this franchise, but at least it seems we've stopped taking on bad contracts to kill our cap over the longterm.

i don't think most Knick fans wanted to see Jalen Rose taking minutes away from the younger guys at G either, so he would've basically wasted away on the bench... i wouldn't have minded simply holding on to his contract until a young player w/some upside potential slipped through the cracks that could take his place on the 15 man roster though... hopefully Isiah will find a player to give our frontcourt a little needed depth that can block some shots... maybe buy out Big Hemorroid & let him sign w/Riley too.

Can anyone imagine KG as he is now and Marbs, Curry, IT, JJ, etc. on same team?

Yeah, Rose had no place here. Give those minutes to Balkman, which is a win/win b/c he will develope and IT will look good for drafting him. I personally would have kept Rose b/c I believe this is the year Minny finally realizes that they need to trade KG, but it seems like NY is done taking on salary. Waiving him saves the team about $6 million with the luxury tax issues, and it clears up PT for Q and Balkman and Lee. We might even still be able to do a KG trade if Frye looks good this year. An improved Frye, M. Rose (cap relief next year), and whatever other player or pick would entice Minny would not be a bad deal for a 30+ year old KG.

any hope we have of trading for KG will necessitate Steve Francis coming back & playing like an Allstar this year... & on top of that we'd have to throw in Channing Frye at the very least & take on some bad longterm contracts from MIN to boot... maybe Dolan considered that prospect & decided to build back up w/the youth & stop repeating the same mistakes of the past that have put this franchise into this mud that they've been spinning their wheels to get out of for the past several years ever since Patrick left?

damn, first we send them Shandon Anderson & Michael Doleac, now Jalen Rose... when will Isiah learn to stop letting Riley have all our star impact players?

Simple our owner ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR, just has to let Isiah now that all deals have to be approved before they go through and he can prevent another stupid decision while holding on to an asset.

Kinda like lottery protecting in the top five of the draft, then Isiah looks like a genius and gets three impact bigs in a year and a half

A player like Rose (or Anderson) can help an established veteran team, while it's more likely that he could have hurt a young team like the Knicks, who are more concerned with developing kids and establishing an identity.

supporting role players will fit on any team w/Shaq & Wade... just like they did w/Shaq & Kobe... when you have 2 of the best players in the league playing for you, Howard freakin' Eisley would look like a smart acquisition.

Hey, I hope Rose gets picked up. Just because we couldn't use him doesn't mean that another team can't.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I don't get why we couldn't put Rose and Mo Taylor on the Tim Thomas plan. Remember how the Bulls told the dude to just sit out the contract and stay away from the team.

by waiving them it saves Dolan a few mil on the luxury tax or something to that effect... at any rate, Dolan was not going to sign off on anymore trades to take on longterm contracts, so there was really no point in keeping them at that point, other than as an insurance policy against other guys getting injured.

I commend Isiah to buyout Mo Taylor and Jalen Rose. They werent great teammates and they were very selfish players. With Richardson improved attitude this team has a much better chemistry this year and that will help in the end. Having a positive locker helps and with a team of young players they need a lot of positive people around.
