The more I hear this guy speak-the less I miss the dude. If he states that Layden is the Knicks best asset--he looks like a fool. He was also in charge of the draft [or the boss] in which we bypassed an all star for a french player that didnt want to play in the us.

we need a basketball player for our next GM

you are a jackass.......checketts hired layden to serve a purpose, evaluate talent and stay behind the scenes. what is he supposed to say? Dolan promoted layden to pres and gm.....dolan is the fool, layden is way over his head, he is responsible for things that checketts never wanted him to be responsible for. checketts did not say that layden is the biggest asset the knicks have, he said he is an asset.....and he is when used the right way....

and no, checketts was not in charge of that draft when the knicks took frederik weis, ed tapscott was..........look it up if you do not believe me

looks like you are the one who is the fool

nice post mornon, lets bash the man who was responsible for taking the knicks to the finals twice and keeping them competitve for over a decade........he is also responsible for the knicks only good players in the present....houston, spree and kt

mr. doobie (I still like that name), you are so correct. I don't know how many times posters have tried to nail Weis on Layden.

One caveat to this whole thing: Layden's father had originally hired him (Checkettes) as a GM in Utah, whereupon Checkettes had re-paid the favor by hiring Scott as the Knicks' GM. Layden may or may not have good GM skills, depending on whom you ask, but there was some good-ol-boy networking going on.

i appreciate you getting my back bro, but i do have to disagree with you on one fact....

frank layden did not hire checketts in utah....sam battistone (the owner at the time) did. i don't mean to sound like an expert, but when checketts was with the jazz, i was a die hard jazz fan living in utah.....then coincedentally enough, i moved to ny right before he was hired by the knicks and began my love affair with the orange and blue. when checketts was hired in utah, frank layden was the coach and they did have a great working relationship. scott layden was a scout at the time and eventually when Checketts left Scott Layden was promoted to vice pres. while checketts was there, he drafted stockton (18th pick) and malone (13th pick) and found larry miller to buy the team and keep them in utah. he also promoted jerry sloan to head coach when frank layden stepped down. between those great moves and what he accomplished with the knicks in the 90's you can see why i get his back and have so much respect for him. he has shaped my whole basketball life.

as far as the good old boy things goes....no argument here, but it was not a returned favor to frank layden by checketts. if anything, frank layden owes checketts for keeping him as coach while the jazz sucked for so many years.

You must be Checkettes posting under that name. No one would defend a GM like that with that type of knowledge that dates back 20 years unless it was the person. Boy how a mighty nba executive has fallen-defending himself on the Internet--well we miss you Dave. I wasnt calling you out specifically I was mad that you gave another public endorsement to the stooge of a GM and yes I think you should take blame for the disaster draft of 1999 since you were ultimately the boss. Obviously the Knick management team was not thurough and let a NY St Johns product who is now playing at all star level at 23 years old pass on by for a guy who was never going to play us hoop. I would call that an A+ blunder.

can you read? just out of curiosity. dont be pissed because you got punked on your own dumbass thread....

as i said before, i lived in utah when he was with the jazz and i moved to new york the year before the knicks hired him. like i said, the man has shaped my entire baskteball life, i ahve no choice but to know a lot about him. i have read his bio and yes, i have a lot of respect for him. hell, he drafted stockton and malong with mid to lower first round picks

that kind of knowledge? what, knowing who the owner, coach and gm of my favorite team is? ya, i must be dave checketts.......i wish. it would be nice to be a multi millionare and run nba teams for a living. i could name the entire management team of the knicks now, and ten years ago. it's called knowledge. maybe you should try to obtain some before you post.......i also actually READ the newspaper and listen the interviews.....it's not that difficult

i agree that picking weis was a huge mistake or an a+ blunder as you put it......my point is that pick was made by the interim gm at the time, ed tapscott....why do you think he hasn't been hired since that pick? but to have that kind of knowledge i must be jeff van gundy, right? if you actually followed the knicks, you would know that checketts stayed away from the draft. when grunfield was there he made the picks, when grunfield was fired, tapscott took over on an interim basis. after that moronic pick, he was let go and layden was hired.

CHECKETTS WAS A BASKETBALL GUY (STOCKTON AND MAOLONE LATE IN FIRST ROUND?) HE ALSO WAS A BUSINESS GUY, THAT IS WHY HE WAS A VALUABLE ASSET. DOLAN IS DUMB FOR LETTING HIM GO.

TAPSCOTT MADE THAT PICK, NOT CHECKETTS, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT
