It is obvious that the Knicks have some defensive deficiencies. I think there is potential for them to be better on defense as the season goes along.

On the other hand, the Nets hang their hat on defense and the Knicks dropped 121 on them without Crawford, Frye, or Lee playing well on offense and Robinson out.

My point is, this team is dangerous already, and their bats aren't even hot, to use a baseball metaphor.

This season might not be awe-inspiring, but it will be interesting.

We better score more because these players are not defensive stalwarts. Our best defense will be an efficient offense. If we can get our offense running smoothly, JJ2, Balkman, Lee, Crawford, and Nate should be able to play just enough defense that we can win some games, but this offense has to work. Preseason has convinced me that Frye and Curry are never going to be good defensive players. The most we can hope is that they develop into average defensive players.

The only thing I have issue with is you saying that the preseeson has proven(To you) that Frye and Curry won't ever be good defensive players. I admit I did not watch Frye that much in college, but I understand he was considered to be a defensive player at AZ. Curry you might be right about, but I think he can become at least decent at defense. But Frye? I think it is a bit premature to close the book on his defensive game before he begins his second season, don't you?

Well, I hold out more hope for Frye than Curry and Frye does try, so maybe I should not say that he can never become a good defensive player. I, however, have not seen the quickness from him that I think would be needed for someone to be a good defensive player at the PF position. I think he can improve and that he can block shots, but I don't see him becoming a young Theo Ratliff or a young Oakley. He, however, can become an adequate defender if he keeps working at it.

Well put. I don't expect Frye to be shutting down the star PF's of the league ever. But nobody does shut them down. Many of them are not star defensive players. In fact, more of them are not. Of the top offensive PF's Tim Duncan is an outstanding defensive player, but I am hard pressed to think of another who really brings it defensively. I am not saying to accept mediocrity, but the reality is that offensive stars get thiers in the NBA.

It's going to be nice when Jeffries gets back. Looking forward top having more of a defensive presence that can guard the opponents best offensive player. I wonder how much he could have done against a great passer (but slow footed one) like Williams last night??? I wonder if Balkman might be used in that capacity. Didn't see the game though.

Fry really spoiled us last year. His defense was not bad for a rookies. It probably gets better from here. Just need some patience...

williams was unconscience at times when balkman was guarding...it was basically the cause of the rift between the teams.

He has it out to get us...and he showed it...but his shoot first mentality helped the knicks figure out how to play him and then he adjusted...it was a good game.

Cato impressed me as well considering he was picked up the day before...he has some good moves and you can see how he alters shots in the paint.

First game for Cato (no training camp, no preseason) and I'm going to be the first to say he's better than jackie butler.

to answer the thread...no, they can't guard us...also, are there many teams in the east that are defense first and have 3 all stars?

If the answer to that is no, then the outlook for the knicks this year is playoffs.

“That will be the test,” Thomas acknowledged recently. “We have to do some things team-wise within our scheme to cover up for the deficiencies that they’ll have on the defensive end.”

A couple of things Isiah might want to consider. I think this team needs to switch it up play zone for certain stretches of the game. If only to throw a wrinkle at the oppostition when they start going on a run. Also, a three-quarter half court trap (not exclusively of course, but sparadically)would be ideal when Isiah goes small. Francis and especially Nate are terrific at playing center field so to speak and could come up with some steals.

Not saying these wrinkles will definitely work, but its obvious we are gona have trouble manning-up for the most part this year.

he threw zone at the sixers successfully...I think isiah still has a bunch of moves left in his bag of tricks for the season.

I guess we have to wait until JJ2 returns to really know what we got.
